Moses Lake beats Wildcats 37-34
Moses Lake victorious against Eastmont
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake battled to the end to beat Eastmont 37-34 Friday night.
"We didn't play as well as I had hoped," said head coach Matt Strophy. "But you've got to take the win."
The Wildcats struck first with less than four minutes left in the first quarter.
The Chiefs tied the game up 6-6 with one minute left in the first but could not take the lead from Eastmont before time ran out.
At the end of the first it was 8-6 Eastmont.
Moses Lake came out in the second and began the quarter with a turnover and Eastmont took advantage, stretching their lead to four.
Carrie Sawyer scored a bucket to start closing the gap and then stepped back for a three to give the Chiefs the 11-10 lead with six minutes left in the half.
Eastmont headed to the line to tie it up before Sawyer pulled up for another three.
Kelly Sutherland earned a steal after the bucket from Sawyer and was sent to the line for two shots. She made one and put Moses Lake up 15-11.
Remeca Norwood was fouled with three minutes left in the half and made 1 of 2 from the line to maintain the four point lead at 16-12 for the Chiefs.
Sawyer recorded her final three of the half, making it 19-12 before Eastmont went on a four point run.
Sutherland ended the half with a banked three-point shot for the Chiefs.
Moses Lake went into the locker room with a six point lead and the momentum.
Sawyer came out in the third and sunk another three.
Eastmont slowly pushed its way back into the game, closing the gap to 25-21.
Sutherland drove the lane with just under two minutes to go in the quarter, pushing the lead back to six.
The Chiefs opened up an eight point lead on a put-back from 32 before the Wildcats trimmed it to five with a three.
The third quarter ended with the Chiefs up 29-27.
Carly Noyes was called for a player control foul and Eastmont trimmed the lead by one.
The Wildcats took the 34-33 lead from the line with 51 seconds left.
Noyes regained the lead for Moses Lake with 30 seconds left.
Sawyer sealed the win for the Chiefs, shooting 2 for 2 from line to make it 37-34.
"We only shot 30 percent from the field," said Strophy. "I thought we'd have an easier time of it."
Sawyer led the team with 14 points, shooting 4 of 8 from three-point range. Noyes had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Sutherland had 10 points and eight steals.
"Carrie, Carly and Kelly scored all but two of our points," said Strophy. "Sutherland will be a main threat for us for the rest of the season."
