Chiefs squander 13-point lead, lose by four

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs took a commanding lead before falling behind the Lions to lose 58-54.

"We relaxed in the fourth quarter and didn't make very good decisions," said head coach Brant Mayo.

Kennewick scored first but Moses Lake got a quick bucket to tie it up 2-2 early on.

Mitch Roylance pulled up for his first three of the night and got the score and a foul with five minutes left in the first. The four-point play gave the Chiefs a 6-2 lead.

The Lions rallied to regain the lead, 8-6, and extended it by four points before Moses Lake answered with a 4-0 scoring run.

The first quarter ended with a 10-10 tie.

Roylance had a quick layup to put Moses Lake up by two early in the second quarter.

The Chiefs continued to battle and extended the lead to four with five minutes left in the half.

Kennewick tied the game up at 14-14 with just over three minutes left before Quinn Baker drove to the hole for the score.

The Lions answered with a three-point shot to take the lead again.

Moses Lake ran the floor and Roylance came up with an offensive rebound and a put-back to give the Chiefs an 18-17 lead.

Kennewick started to pull away with less than two minutes left in the half, regaining the lead and stretching it to 21-18.

BJ Guerra got the bucket for Moses Lake and was fouled on his way up, he missed his freethrow but brought Moses Lake within one.

Roylance came up with a steal for Moses Lake and took the ball to the hole to put the Chiefs up 22-21.

Guerra was fouled with 45 seconds left and made one shot from the free-throw line to extend the lead 23-21.

Moses Lake went into the locker room with the lead.

In the third quarter, Josh Loera came out shooting well for Moses Lake.

Loera had the first score of the second half — a quick jumpshot — and followed it up with a three to give Moses Lake a 28-22 lead.

Roylance continued to drain the three-ball, hitting another with just under three minutes left in the third and putting Moses Lake up 35-28.

Moses Lake stretched the lead to 10 before Kennewick began to play catch-up ball.

The Lions tightened the lead to eight before Baker scored a put-back in the final 5 seconds of the third to bring it to 41-31 as the clock expired.

The Chiefs hustled out and pushed the lead to 13 with seven minutes left in the game.

The scoring slowed for Moses Lake and Kennewick took advantage of the lapse.

With four minutes left Kennewick trimmed the deficit to just four points.

The Chiefs scored their last point from the freethrow line with two minutes left.

Kennewick then went on a 12-0 run to win the game 58-54.

Roylance led the team with 21 points.
