Chiefs lap competition at swim meet

Moses Lake beat Davis, Ike by a combined 276-75

MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs hosted a dual meet against Davis and Eisenhower Thursday. Moses Lake defeated Davis 149-18 and beat Ike 127-57.

"We had three more guys qualify for districts," said head coach Tony St. Onge.

Brian Butterfield qualified for districts in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Nick Kardong qualified in the 500 freestyle. Ilya Demchuk qualified in the 100 breaststroke.

Moses Lake's Mario Polito qualified for state in the 100 freestyle.

"We narrowly missed the district qualifying times in all three relays," said St. Onge. "But we're starting to close in. Ideally, we would qualify all three teams before districts. We've never done that before."

The Chiefs begin their 12 days of break practices tomorrow. This unique tradition includes regular workouts plus specific routines like 100 meters of closed fist swimming and singing. Each day of practice the team captains pick a specific workout set while singing to the tune of "12 Days of Christmas."

"The key to a strong second half of the season is the 12 sets of Christmas," St. Onge said.

Moses Lake is currently 3-1 this season.

"A lot of guys are coming on strong," said St. Onge.
