Moses Lake earns win in second half
MOSES LAKE — The Chiefs hosted Walla Walla Friday night and surged to a 53-47 win in the second half.
Moses Lake struggled with turnovers early and could not maintain possession.
Walla Walla took a quick 4-3 lead and stretched it as the first quarter progressed.
When the Lady Blue Devils made it an 11-3 lead, Moses Lake took a time out to talk over the scoring run.
Moses Lake scored their second bucket of the night to stop a 11-0 scoring run by Walla Walla.
As the first quarter expired, Walla Walla was up 16-7.
The Chiefs started to fight their way back into the game with a forced shot clock violation.
Carrie Sawyer had a pull up jumper and it was followed by a steal by Kelly Sutherland.
Remeca Norwood played her first minutes at home and began it with aggressive play down low.
Moses Lake whittled the Walla Walla lead to 21-18.
When the second quarter ended, Walla Walla was just five points, 25-20, on Moses Lake.
"The key to the second half was turning the ball over fewer times," said head coach Matt Strophy.
Moses Lake closed the gap further, 38-36, as the third quarter wound down.
"(Marielle) McKean had 12 points in the third quarter," Strophy said. McKean's defender was in foul trouble to facilitate the scoring burst.
Walla Walla was limited to a mere nine points in the fourth quarter.
McKean had 18 points. Carly Noyes had 12 points. Sawyer 11 points.
The Chiefs play at home against Eastmont next Friday and at Kennewick Saturday.
