Sheriff's vehicle totaled in accident

VANTAGE — A Grant County Sheriff's Office truck was totaled in a one-vehicle rollover accident Wednesday morning.

The driver, deputy Jon Melvin, lost control of the 2002 Ford F-350 extended cab pickup while maneuvering past a semi-truck along Interstate 90 near Vantage.

Melvin and passenger Gary Baker, of Wilson Creek, both escaped injury, according to the GCSO. The men were wearing their safety belts and they said the harnesses kept them from serious injury.

The accident occurred about two miles below Ryegrass Summit in Kittitas County around 8:15 a.m.

The semi-truck was traveling in the center of the three-lane stretch of I-90 and slush had accumulated in the far left lane, so Melvin attempted to pass on the far right, Turley said. He lost control of the pickup truck after coming into contact with an icy section of the right lane.

"He was probably going a little too fast," Turley said.

The vehicle had nearly 70,000 miles on the odometer. Investigators determined it to be a total loss, the GCSO stated.
