Quincy man shot twice with assault rifle in George

| August 16, 2005 9:00 PM

GEORGE — Several shots were fired from what witnesses described as an AK-47 assault rifle, leaving one man injured near the George Community Center Sunday night.

Juan R. Fonseca, 19, of Quincy, was wounded by two bullets from the assault rifle. One round went through his lower abdomen and another through one of his hands, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

Fonseca was taken to Quincy Valley Hospital in a private vehicle and was later flown to Central Valley Hospital in Wenatchee. He underwent surgery for his injuries and his current condition is unknown at this time.

No one else was injured during the incident, and the attack appeared to be specific toward Fonseca, the GCSO stated.

Deputies who arrived on the scene were told by witnesses that an older model Lincoln Continental with Hispanic males had stopped near a parking area east of the community center. One of the two suspects, who were not identified, apparently exited the vehicle and took a firearm from the trunk, the GCSO stated.

The suspect then chased Fonseca on foot and fired rounds from the weapon as he ran north on Montmorency Boulevard between cars.

The shooting remains under investigation.
