Moses Lake mayor running for re-election
Covey seeking third full term on council
MOSES LAKE — Ronald Covey wants to continue the work he's done as a member of the Moses Lake City Council, and that's why the current Moses Lake Mayor has filed for re-election to the council he has served for almost a decade.
"The reason that I decided to run for re-election is that I feel I can make a difference in a positive vein," Covey said.
Covey is running unopposed for Council Position No. 2, and a third full term on the council.
The last two years of Covey's nearly 10 on the council have been as mayor, and Covey said he hopes the council sees fit to allow him to continue in that position. Under the council/manager form of government, the mayor is elected by council members every two years.
"The last two years of my now almost 10 years on the council has been the most enjoyable," Covey said, "primarily because of the positive, progressive thinking of the current seated council."
Covey sees such projects as downtown revitalization and Sinkiuse Square as those he would like to help bring to fruition. Covey also mentioned the acquisition and improvement to a number of city park facilities, and said he would like to work with the city on its efforts to improve the water quality of the lake itself. The city is currently in the planning stages on a future civic center, another project Covey said he is looking forward to.
"There's just a lot of things on the burner that are out there that need attention," Covey said.
And Covey said his experience is such that he would like to continue to bring to the city council. A retired chiropractor who practiced for almost 30 years in Moses Lake, Covey said he feels his experience has translated well into city government.
Before joining the council, Covey served 10 years on the board of directors of the Chiropractic Society of Washington and about eight years on the Moses Lake Planning Commission.
The city is one that Covey has grown up and gone to school in, a town he has made his home for most of his life. He said Moses Lake is a town he takes a great deal of pride in. Covey said he would like to do something in return for all that, and is hoping to be re-elected to his position this fall.
"I would like to see the best quality of life for all of its citizens," Covey said of Moses Lake.
