Tigers have no luck against Cascade

The Lady Tigers had their first loss since last tennis season Saturday against Cascade, 3-2. In girls singles, Alison Peck, defending state champion, from Cascade defeated Gennisa Bornog (6-4, 6-1) and Caitlyn Evans of Cascade defeated Lydia Hennig (6-2, 6-1). In girls doubles, Webb/Hutchinson, of Ephrata, beat Casper/Espanoza (6-0, 6-4) and Bair/Rattigan of Ephrata defeated Isadore/McComas (6-3, 6-4). Cascade s Boscow/Rise took the other doubles win against Van Huesden/Senn (6-0, 6-4).

The Ephrata boys did not fare any better than the girls. In boys singles, Leon Rubalcava, of Ephrata, defeated Taylor Solum (6-2, 6-3) and Alex Gorski of Cascade beat Clark Grigg (6-1, 6-7(4-7), 6-2). In boys doubles, Harr/Lutz, of Ephrata, defeated Fritz/Powers (6-1, 3-6, 6-1). Cascade s Newell/Murphy defeated Cummings/Willauer (6-0, 6-2) and Daughtery/Petit, also of Cascade, beat Yenney/DeStio (6-0, 6-2).

Royal traveled to Columbia-Burbank for a mid-season tournament on Saturday and came home with three first place trophies. In boys singles Guilherme Almeida continued his undefeated season on Saturday, beating Den Brejeen of Columbia-Burbank (6-4, 6-2) in the championship match. Mike Hebdon, a freshman in his first singles match, placed fourth overall.

In boys doubles, the team of Bustios/Meseberg took first, defeating Rucker/Gordon of Columbia-Burbank in the championship match (7-5, 5-7, 7-5) and DeLay/Dalkey took third overall with a match record of 3-1.

In girls singles Marilyn Conterro was defeated in the first and second round matches and eliminated early.

In girls doubles, the team of Jansen/Jansen, of Royal City, defeated Conroy/Perez, of Goldendale, for the championship, (0-6, 6-4, 7-5).

Quincy had a tough day on the tennis courts Saturday, losing all but one match to Cashmere.

The Jacks single win came in the third boys doubles match when the team of Mendez/Velasquez defeated West/Newberry (6-3, 6-1). Other boys scores: Carl Seaburg was defeated by Joe Boyle (0-6, 0-6), Kyle Ovenell was beat by Chase Evans (0-6, 0-6), Lopez/Rasmussen were defeated by Ovenell/Ovenll (1-6, 3-6) and Fries/Knodell lost to Frost/Cibicki (2-6, 6-7).

The girls team was shut out by Cashmere. In girls singles, Mindy Kim was defeated by Katie Radoslovich (1-6, 0-6) and Taylor Sunwold lost to Shawna Smith (0-6, 0-6). In girls doubles Bird/Faw fell to Thies/Simmons (2-6, 3-6), Santos/Romero lost to Bushy/Wise (4-6, 5-7) and Felder/VanDyke were defeated by Pearson/Curry (0-6, 1-6).

The Moses Lake girls team played Central Valley and University High on Saturday and lost to both.

In the Central Valley match-up the Lady Chiefs were able to muster three wins in girls singles. Gabe Madson defeated Rochelle Moore (6-4, 6-0), Nikki Chambers beat Katie Weller (6-0, 6-0) and Charleen Johnson won over Sierra Foutch (6-4, 6-3). In the fourth girls singles match Lexie Graham was defeated by Jie Jiao (5-7, 3-6).

In girls doubles Central Valley swept the matches. Baker/Kofoed fell to Murphy/Severs (2-6, 3-6), Stevens/Stoker lost to Kern/Cook (1-6, 0-6), Gessel/Karr were defeated by Graves/Johnson (4-6, 6-3, 2-6) and Goodrich/Bean lost to Thompson/Moran (0-6, 2-6).

Moses Lake had two wins against University High, both came in the girls singles. Gabe Madson defeated Kamin Alteneder (6-2, 6-2) and Nikki Chambers beat Laura Woodard (6-1, 6-1). Charleen Johnson lost to Allie Tabish (6-7(5-7), 4-6) and Lexie Graham was defeated by Olivia Sanchez (4-6, 1-6).

In girls doubles University High swept the matches. Baker/Kofoed fell to Miles/Lewrie (4-6, 2-6), Stevens/Stoker lost to Pamish/Tenney (1-6, 1-6), Gessel/Karr lost to Fuher/Collison (2-6, 4-6) and Goodrich/Bean were defeated by Archibald/Frame (0-6, 6-3, 1-6).

The first game was a close heartbreaker for senior Calvin Mathis as Royal lost to Goldendale 11-10.

All I could do was take my hat off [after the game] and feel sorry for him because we couldn t get the win. He left everything he had on the mound. said coach Paul Olsufka.

The Knights 10 runs came off of eight hits. Eldridge went 2 for 4 with two runs, Ray Valle went 2 for 4 with three runs and 2 RBIs and Kyle Scroggins had a double.

The Knights lost 11-4 in the second game with just four hits. Eldridge had two runs and Scroggins had a solo homerun to center that left the park in a hurry.

In a doubleheaader that contained 26 errors, the Ephrata Tigers managed the least amount of mistakes to top Cashmere 13-11 in game one and 13-3 in the second game.

Aaron Sonnabend went 2-for-5 in game one with an RBI and 3-5 in the second game with three RBIs and a triple.

Ratigan pitched game two, striking out five, while allowing one earned run on four hits in the game.

The Lady Tigers defeated Cashmere in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday.

Ephrata beat Cashmere 13-3 in the first game with 13 hits and just two errors. Tiffany Moncrief hit 2 for 3. Laura Tinnelle went 3 for 4 with two triples. Tina Hecker hit 2 for 4 with a double and Mary Eisen went 3 for 3 with a double.

In the second game it was more of the same. Ephrata took the match-up 16-5 with 16 hits and two errors. Tiffany Moncrief hit 3 for 4. Laura Tinnelle went 2 for 3 with a homerun. Tina Hecker hit 2 for 4. Kelly Neil hit 4 for 4 and Kay Bassert went 3 for 3.

Warden lost to Zillah on Saturday, 10-9, in nine innings. Zillah took an early 2-0 lead in the game but Warden was able to battle back to take an 8-2 lead. Zillah came charging back and tied the game at 8-8. The game was lost in the 9th for the Lady Cougars; they came up with only one hit to Zillah s two.

Warden had 14 hits on the day. TJ Mora hit 3 for 5 with one homerun and 2 RBIs, Marce Villegas had a triple and Amanda Martin hit 2 for 4 with a double.

Jennifer Kotong and Ashton Stott shared duties on the mound and gave up just three walks.

Warden s next game is one week from Tuesday against Riverview.

The Lady Knights defeated White Swan, 10-0, on Saturday. Royal s ten runs came off of six hits and the girls committed only one error. Ashley Baker and Morgan Yearout shared duties on the mound. Baker threw 9 strike outs in four innings and Yearout had four strike outs. Angie Verhi and Natalie Tostdahl caught for the Lady Knights.

Mackenzie Brown hit 2 for 2 with two singles and Ashley Baker went 2 for 3.

Royal plays Tonasket, at home, on Tuesday.

The Tigers defeated Okanogan 10-0, out-shooting the Bulldogs 27-4. It was a scoring clinic by Ephrata with Marcos Ferrias hitting a school record five goals in a single game. Ferrias is just a freshman and Saturday night s goals were the first five goals of his career.

Also scoring for the Tigers was Frankie Navarro and Mauro Chavez with two goals each and Kai Hirz with a goal to round out the scoring for Ephrata.

Ephrata keepers Matt Barr and Dan Lendeck had two saves each.

Othello took the win on Saturday, beating Royal 4-2. Othello had 22 shots-on-goal to Royal s 14.

Othello scored the first two goals of the day. Juan Perado found the back of the net in the 22nd minute and Daniel Negrete in the 28th.

Royal rallied to tie it up. Juan Salas scored in the 34th and Daniel O Campos found the net in the 39th.

Othello closed the match with two more goals. The first came from Jose Martinez in the 60th minute and the other was Julio Cerna in the 63rd.

Track & Field

Chiefs place in Pasco

Moses Lake took ten individuals to the Pasco Invitational on Saturday and had three placers. David Moore took sixth in the javelin with a distance of 178 11 . Kraig Grant tied for sixth in the pole vault with a cleared height of 13 6 . Aaron Wafer placed eighth in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 11.02 seconds and 22.38 seconds respectively.
