Chiefs avoid Davis comeback with late second half goal

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake's soccer team avoided a four-game skid Saturday with a 3-2 win over Davis.

Domingo Valenzuela came in with less than 15 minutes to go in the second half and proved valuable after knocking in a Mick Aney rebound for a goal in the 77th minute to put the Chiefs ahead 3-2, a score that saw no change in the final minutes.

The Chiefs were coming off losses to Richland, Southridge and Kamiakin and in the 10 games played this season, had taken a lead into halftime eight times. Saturday against the Pirates was no different.

Jose Ramirez scored the first goal of the game for Moses Lake on a penalty kick, which occurred after Aney got tripped from behind on a breakaway in the 19th minute. Following Ramirez' goal, Jacob Bruce knocked a goal in from a Collin Earl deep pass from the sideline to put the Chiefs up 2-0 with 18 minutes to play in the first half.

Less than nine minutes later, Roberto Silva got free on a Davis breakaway and maneuvered past Moses Lake keeper Joel Quevedo for a goal in the 31st minute.

Following halftime, Silva tied the game at 2-2 on a corner kick. Both sides went into a stalemate the rest of the half until Aney shot cross field at the Davis keeper, who couldn't hold onto the ball, resulting in Valenzuela's put-back for the win.

The Chiefs face Walla Walla at home on Tuesday.
