Fire damages McCosh Park building

Damages to reach the thousands of dollars

MOSES LAKE — A fire destroyed the roof of a bathroom at McCosh Park early this morning, leaving no injuries but thousands of dollars in damages.

Brett Bastian, fire marshal at the Moses Lake Fire Department, said the fire was first reported at 4:30 a.m. The causes of the fire could be traced to a break-in of a soda machine.

"They pried the door open," Bastian said. "It caused either the compressor or the wiring to overheat; shorting the circuit and causing the fire."

Bastian said that although the fire was confined to the building and it did not damage any grassy areas or other sections of the park, the roof of the bathroom was damaged extensively enough that it will have to be replaced.

The damages are estimated to run between $10,000 and $15,000, although Bastian said it might go higher.

There are no suspects at this time, Bastian said, adding that further investigation of suspects will be conducted by the Moses Lake Police Department.
