Cougars look sharp as Kisler controls the floor

Sierra Kisler seemed like she was at the center of every Warden rally as the Cougars beat up on a rusty Quincy team, sweeping all three games in the girls' non-league volleyball match Thursday night.

Quincy took a 3-0 lead in the first game, but Warden took over with six- and eight-point runs — a trend that would continue throughout the match.

Warden won the game 25-14, and it was as close as Quincy would get. Warden pulled of eight- and nine-point runs in the second game to pull away with the 25-12 win. The final game was more of the same.

The Cougars were led by Kisler, who was 13 for 13 serving with six aces.

"She's a really tough girl," said Warden head coach David Vega of Kisler. "She's proving that she's her own player."

Kisler's six kills, added to solid team play spelled trouble for the Quincy Jacks, which had trouble handling Warden's serves. Outside-hitter Stacy Ruge was also perfect, serving 11 for 11 with four digs.

"We haven't done much so far this year," Vega said. "We've had some pretty tough losses, but we kept our confidence up and played hard. You just have to love the results."

The Jacks looked shaky, Vega said, because it was their first game of the season.

"They're not going to play like that all year," he said. "We got a little lucky to catch them there. I was really pleased with my team for being so consistent and keeping them down when we had them down."

The Jacks were under the helm of new head coach Jeanne Brindle, who said the game showed her what the team needs to work on.

"We didn't have any games to fall back on and obviously it showed," she said. "We have our word cut out for us, having to play catch-up. There's lots of little areas we've got to work on."

Brindle said she has high expectations of her team, though they will have to improve on floor communication.

"I have a good all-around team," she said, "But we started in a hole and we're going to have to dig ourselves out as we go."112-OhmoPIfC)warden/quincy vb 9/17 Sports HD112
