Alta Lucille Beus, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Othello, Wash. on October 25, 2004.

Alta was born in Providence, Utah on December 14, 1913. She was the daughter of Emma Lillie Naylor Mansfield and Lorenzo Mansfield. Much of her childhood was spent in a small Utah mining town called Winter Quarters, filled with fond memories even though life was difficult at times.

When Alta was 15, her father died and not long afterward her mother became seriously ill. Alta did her best to help provide and care for her six younger brothers and sisters. She worked as a store clerk, a waitress, and a telephone operator until she met and married Evan Hugh Beus on March 11, 1936. Later Alta and Evan were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

Together they raised nin children while farming in Hooper, Utah, Parma, Idaho, and then Nyssa, Ore. In 1958 they moved to Othello where they also farmed until Evan retired and later passed away in July 1990.

Evan and Alta also owned the Tastee Freeze on E. Main for several years, and later Alta worked at the Othello Community Hospital as a dietician.

Alta's main callings in life were as a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her homemade bread has never been equaled. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many capacities. One of the highlights of her life was serving with her husband in Seattle Temple for several years.

Alta lived a life of great love, faith, and service. Thirty-seven of her descendants have served as LDS missionaries, sharing their faith and testimonies in many states and countries throughout the world.

Alta is survived by: her six sons and three daughters, Clair and wife, Corynne of St. George, Utah, Don and wife, Quella of Pasco, Wash., Eva Lu and husband, Larry Kent, Dale and wife, Carolyn Beus , Susan and husband, Don Gentry, Kathy Harris, all of Othello, Glenn and wife, Kathy Beus of Othello but presently serving as president of the Moscow, Russia Mission for the LDS Church, Clark and wife, Margaret Beus of Benton City, Ore. and Roger and wife, Stacy Beus of Cheney, Wash.; 55 grandchildren and 124 great-grandchildren; and her twin sisters, Wanda Lythgoe and Wilma White of Ogden, Utah.

There are angels who walk among us, love just walks with them. Without spoken words you know how much they care. Mother, heaven's gates now open for you, smiling faces with open arms. Your love will live on, on both sides of the veil.
