Moses Lake claims first in nine out of 12 events

MOSES LAKE - A win by the Moses Lake Chiefs was an expectation. A blowout, definitely.

There was nothing spectacular about the Cheifs' 116-63 win over the Kamiakin Braves swim team. But, it was the expected that Moses Lake come out and claim nine first-place finishes to set the tone for the meet.

"We have to expect ourselves to do that," Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge said. "We have been losing nine out of 12 in the other meets. If we are going to win duel meets, we have to win six or seven and go deep."

Moses Lake set the tone for the meet early with the 200-medley relay team easily taking first and just missing a state qualifying time, something the Chiefs haven't been able to do this season.

According to St. Onge, Marielle McKean, Stephanie McFarland and the 200-medley relay team is on the curb of qualifying for state.

"I am not surprised because it has taken awhile for our swimmers to get in shape and we are on the verge now," St. Onge said.

The road gets a little steeper for the Chiefs who will go against Eisenhower, the defending 2003 district champions on Saturday and then against undefeated Wenatchee on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

"The goal of this team is to go out and win a big meet," St. Onge said.
