Sculpture project picks logo

Plan to bring art to streets set to start in January

MOSES LAKE — The Sculpture Without Walls project, set on bringing art to the streets of the city next year, continues taking strides.

This time, it is in the form of a logo.

"We needed the logo to give (the program) an identity," said Moses Lake Museum and Arts Center manager Terry Mulkey, who made the final decision on which logo to pick.

The logo, a light blue S turned slightly on its head, sitting atop the scripture "Sculpture Without Walls," will be featured in all of the programs, ballots, letterheads and fliers, as well as some of the advertising for the project, which is set to begin its work in earnest in January.

"It's a dynamic logo," Mulkey said. "It shows movement." He noted that unlike two of the other logos, sporting swan-shaped S's, this logo had no wildlife element to it.

"We don't want to have just sculptures that have to do with wildlife," he said. "We don't want the logo to dictate what we get." The work of artists from all over the northwest will be featured in places such as McCosh Park, Neppel Landing and Sinkiuse Square.

Initial estimates state the project might cost around $10,000. The city is expected to chip in about 60 percent of that, depending on the number of sponsors.

The project will belong to the MAC, but Mulkey said that it will be much larger than anything the museum has ever done before.

"It should take on a life of its own," he said. "It's always good to have exhibits outside the museum."

As far as the response a project like this might receive, Mulkey is optimistic that people will "jump on board" once things start happening, if not before.
