Sister city introduces ambassadors
Six students selected to represent city of Moses Lake
We're going to Japan.
That was most likely the reaction of the six students recently selected to represent Moses Lake by the Yonezawa Sister City Exchange committee.
This year's students are Becky Bertram, Lana Cromer, Cambrie Jones, Jessica McAlavy, JessicaOdegaard, and Carisa Brumet as alternate. These young ladies will be escorted and chaperoned by Hailey Heath and Mary Kile.
The Yonezawa Sister City Exchange program has been in place for 23 years, with the purpose of promoting relations between the two communities. The "Sister City Exchange" program was established in 1981. Since then students representing Moses Lake have flown to Japan to spend a week with a host family in Yonezawa, Japan, learning about their community and culture. In return the students of the Japanese host families will visit Moses Lake for a week staying with the Moses Lake students families learning about the Moses Lake community and culture.
Both communities plan activities with an emphasis on education and international understanding, as well as social and cultural experiences.
This year's group of students want to thank those who supported them at the recent car wash held at Wal-Mart on May 1st. They will also be participating at a "Sister City" sponsored luncheon/auction, June 25th. This luncheon/auction is a fundraiser for the "Sister City" program. Individual tickets will be $20, or a group of eight can purchase a table for $100. A live auction of items will be held during this luncheon, all proceeds going towards the Yonezawa Sister City Exchange Program. The group will also be doing various other fundraising activities to support their trip to Japan this summer.
