MLHS places fifth in math honor society competition

| May 17, 2004 9:00 PM

Moses Lake High School has some of the best high-school mathematicians in the country, as demonstrated by their fifth-place finish in the 2003-2004 Mu Alpha Theta Contest. This national mathematics competition is administered by National Assessment & Testing (http://www.natassessment.com) for Mu Alpha Theta (http://www.mualphatheta.org), a national high-school mathematics honor society. The competition consisted of three rounds in November, January, and March. Each round covered a broad range of topics and difficulties, presenting individual students with fifteen problems to be solved in thirty minutes. Students participated in each round at their school using materials their advisors received by postal and electronic mail, which is how all National Assessment and Testing contests are administered.

Unlike other National Assessment & Testing competitions, awards for the contest were given in four geographic regions, because that is how Mu Alpha Theta categorizes their membership. Moses Lake High School is in Region 1 (roughly the western half of the United States) and was compared with other schools in this region. In addition, this contest was free to all participants as a benefit of membership in Mu Alpha Theta.

After waiting for results from thousands of students from hundreds of schools, several Moses Lake students received individual awards, helping their team to finish fifth in their region. In the Theta (least experienced) division, Andy Su placed third, Cameron Frederick was fourth, and David Lee V finished in tenth place. In the Alpha (middle) division, Eriel Thomas was third and Nathaniel White placed eighth. National Assessment & Testing plans to administer this contest again as one of six contests offered in the 2004-2005 academic year.

The only schools from the eastside who participated were Moses Lake High School, Lewis & Clark High School from Spokane, Pullman High School and Kiona-Benton High School. There were approximately 400 students competing at this competition from 22 different schools.

Moses Lake High School has 22 students that are members of this organization.

Last summer the group attended the national competition held in Atlanta, Georgia for the first time and plan to attend at the national level again in summer of 2005 where it will be held in Hawaii. They are currently doing fundraising for this event.
