Mariners put Soriano on DL

SEATTLE (AP) — Right-hander Rafael Soriano, who was the losing pitcher in a 7-6 loss to the New York Yankees in Seattle on Sunday, was placed on the disabled list Tuesday.

The Mariners said Soriano, 24, has a mild sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The move is retroactive to Monday.

The Mariners recalled infielder Ramon Santiago from Triple-A Tacoma to take Soriano's place on their 25-man roster. He was expected to join the team in Minnesota Tuesday night for the start of a six-game road trip.

Soriano has an 0-3 record and a 13.50 ERA in six games, all relief appearances, and 3 1-3 innings with the Mariners this season. He was being counted on to play a major role in Seattle's bullpen this season, but he hasn't been healthy.

He suffered a strained oblique muscle during spring training and, spent some time on rehabilitation at Double-A San Antonio and Class A Inland Empire in California.

In Sunday's game against the Yankees, the last-place Mariners had a 6-0 lead after two innings, but starter Jamie Moyer and their bullpen couldn't hold it. That loss dropped them to a 12-19 record.

Santiago, 24, came to the Mariners Jan. 8 from Detroit in the trade that sent shortstop Carlos Guillen to the Tigers. At Tacoma, he was hitting .180 (18-for-100) in 27 games, with no home runs and six RBIs.
