DETROIT (AP) — The Seattle Mariners got a solid pitching performance from Gil Meche and let their bats take care of the rest.

Meche allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, and Scott Spiezio and Brett Boone homered in the Mariners' 12-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

”It was good to have,” Meche said of the Mariners' offensive outburst. ”I've always said that as a starting pitcher, you get run support earlier in the ballgame, it's a lot easier to calm down and go out there and make pitches.”

John Olerud was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Seattle, which set a season high for runs on 14 hits.

Meche (1-2) struck out four and walked three, and allowed only Craig Monroe's third-inning single during the first four innings.

”He mixed it up,” Detroit catcher Brandon Inge said. ”Both sides of the plate, changed speeds and had a good breaking ball.”

The Mariners took a quick lead against Nate Cornejo (1-3) by scoring twice in the first inning.

Ichiro Suzuki led off with a single, and Boone doubled into the left-field corner one out later. Monroe bobbled the ball in left, allowing Suzuki to score on his error. Raul Ibanez followed with a booming double off the center-field wall to drive in Boone.

”We haven't led from start to finish all year — this is the first game,” Seattle manager Bob Melvin said. ”This is the first game we've been able to relax a bit for a couple innings.”

The Mariners added four in the fifth, started by Spiezio's two-run homer that knocked Cornejo from the game. Spiezio lined a 3-2 pitch into the right-field bullpen for his third homer of the season.

Cornejo allowed four runs and six hits in 4 1-3 innings.

”Today, I was throwing more strikes and pitches across the plate,” he said. ”But I got in trouble when I got behind.”

Olerud drove in two more with a bases-loaded single off Esteban Yan to make it 6-0.

Detroit got a two-run double from Eric Munson in the fifth, but Seattle added two in the seventh on Olerud's RBI single and Rich Aurilia's sacrifice fly, and four more in the eighth on Suzuki's RBI triple and Boone's three-run homer.

Boone was originally not in the lineup because of a sore back, but he convinced Melvin to put him in.

”I was fine and when I'm fine, there's no reason for me to sit,” Boone said. ”I could tell after batting practice today that I was going to be able to go. It was a little sore, but it wasn't something that was going to keep me out. I wasn't worried about injuring it any further. I felt good.”

Ibanez was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Randy Winn 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Notes: Detroit CF Alex Sanchez walked for the first time this season when he led off in the first. He had gone 76 plate appearances without receiving a pass. … Spiezio was 2-for-6 and is hitting .314 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI in his career against the Tigers, and Ibanez is .321 with 11 homers and 46 RBI against Detroit. … Munson's double in the fifth snapped an 0-for-13 slump.
