Chiefs walk over Richland, hold off Pasco

MOSES LAKE - During Ron Seibel's last year as head coach of the Moses Lake wrestling team, Pasco got a win, the first one against the retiring head coach in 28 years.

The new head coach Nathan Stanley made sure the Bulldogs didn't give him a loss in their first meeting.

Moses Lake defeated Richland 53-15, then held on for a 31-27 win over Pasco in the second duel Tuesday at the Moses Lake High School. The Chiefs need to win one of their last four matches against the Bulldogs to secure the win and Brett Fredrickson came through with a 4-3 win over Phillip Urlacher at 215 pounds.

"It was nice to get that win back from Pasco and I know a lot of people were happy that we did that," Stanley said.

"Pasco was the meat and the main course of what we were trying to do here tonight."

Stanley said Moses Lake didn't try to look past Richland, but new the lineup favored the Chiefs. Stanley added that Pasco was on the fore front of the minds of his wrestlers.

"I could give you the coaches answer and say we take one match at a time," Stanley said, but added "I think a lot of our kids were geared up to wrestle Pasco."

Richland's Dalton Walker opened the first dual with a 2:27 pin over John Silva at 103 pounds, the Moses Lake won its next five pins, picking up close decisions from Joe Vela at 112 pounds and Jordan Hill at 125.

Moses Lake's Anthony Vela (119) and Sean Hoiness (130) helped extend the lead with second round pins and Cody Hoiness gave the Chiefs a 22-6 lead over the Bombers by defeating Roth Alexander 16-6.

Trevor Cole (140) fell to Richland's Robbie Welch 6-1 for the Bombers second victory of the match, but Moses Lake's Thomas Courtright followed with a first-round pin over Jake Sharp. Ty Payne defeated Richland's Mike Hein 6-1, Nick Lane (160) won handidly over Richland's Josh Wick 18-5 and Moses Lake's John Fackrell (171) pinned Cody Dahlman in the first round.

Moses Lake's Stevie Vasquez (189) and Brett Frederickson (215) each received a forfeit and Warren Jones fell to Richland's Kevin Biddle midway through the second round for the Bombers' third win of the dual.

"We wrestled Richland and I think obviously based on the score, we matched up well against them," Stanley said.

Pasco opened up its match against Moses Lake with the idea of repeating last year's performance. Josh Martinez started repeat with a late second round pin over Silva at 103 pounds.

Jerry Yniquez (112) followed with a 6-5 win over Joe Vela and an early 9-0 lead over Moses Lake. Anthony Vela (119) picked up the first win for Moses Lake with a 13-0 major decision over George Mendez to cut the lead to 9-4, but Pasco's James Borey (125) captured an 11-5 win over Moses Lake's Jordan Hill.

Sean Hoiness brought more life back to the Chiefs' bench with a 40-second pin over Pasco's Steven Borey to cut the lead to 12-10, then Cody Hoiness (135) pinned Ray Segura late in the first round to hand Moses lake a 16-10 lead they would never relinquish.

Moses Lake's Cole (140) bounced back from his Richland loss to pick up a 7-4 decision over Pasco's Jose Duarte. Courtright (145) defeated Bobby Everson 9-6 and Payne (152) defeated Jr. Campos 6-3.

Stanley changed the lineup, bringing in Lee Richards in at 160 pounds to face Pasco's Brandon Jackson for a come-from-behind 11-6 win that forced the Bulldogs to win the last four matches to win the match.

"He gets the job done and I think that is underselling what he did in that match tonight," Stanley said. "That kid came out and wanted to throw and get a pin and Lee took his time and got points."

Stevie Martinez (171) started the Bulldog winning streak with an early second round pin over Fackrell, then Vasquez (189) fell to Phillip Urlacher 9-5 to cut Moses Lake's lead to 28-21.

Frederickson (215) faced off against Demitri Miles and fell behind 2-1 after the first round. Frederickson gained a 3-2 lead off a head-and-arm late in the second, then scored an escape point in the third period to eventually win 4-3.

"If we can wrestle smart and push guys into the third round, we are going to win the majority of those matches," Stanley said.

Matthew Allison (275) pinned Jones in the second round for the final match.

"It was a great match by both teams, but I think we wrestled a little smarter and that was the difference," Stanley added.
