Outlaws Return with a Bang

Clang, chunk, and smash: those were the three best words to describe the 100 lap Northwest Outlaw Street Stock main event Saturday night at Ephrata Raceway Park.

A gigantic field of 28 cars were present for the last appearance of the year for the outlaws, and it was, for lack of a better term, a high cost demolition derby. The race itself featured mufflers coming off, engines going snap-crackle-pop, and cars wadding themselves up on yellow flag parade laps. Jimmy Allen Jr. was the lucky driver who succeeded in avoiding the mishaps, inheriting the lead from Bobby Graddy on lap 21 when Grady exploded his motor.

Allen then fought off challenger Brad Borton, the 2003 series champ, win the 75-lap feature. Local favorite Eric Hector finished third. Bill Patty of Quincy paced the field for the early portion of the event before getting tangled up in traffic on lap 17. All told, 12 of the original 28 starting cars finished the race, five on the lead lap. Dave Lund set fast time and a new track record for the outlaws at 15.30. Grady and Glen Steadman won the trophy dashes. Eric Lund, Chris Crain, and Ben Meyette won the heats.

After a year full of Camaro domination, a non-Camaro finally took home a main event trophy in the Larry's Auto & Marine Hobby Stocks. Kevin Hill, piloting his 1980-ish Monte Carlo, finally broke through the Camaro barrier, grabbing the lead from Nick Sieg on lap 5 and crossing the stripe first on lap 30 to win his first main of the 2004 year. Sean Giraud finished second in the main and had the quickest qualifying mark of the season at 16.57. Kevin Bottineau and Daniel Hector won the dashes. Bottineau also collected a heat race win, as did JR Miner.
