Chiefs stop six game losing streak

Davis took game one, but Brandon Hill lifted the Moses Lake baseball team to victory with a game-winning home run in game two of a doubleheader.

The Pirates' Andrew Clausen stole the show away from Hill in game one, allowing one run over seven innings, to lead the Davis to the 5-1 victory at Larson Field Thursday, but Hill had the last laugh with a bomb to left field in the bottom of the seventh, capturing a 4-3 win.

"It was fun and hopefully that will get us going," Hill said. "Hopefully that was what we needed."

Moses Lake head coach called it a win "in the worst way because we lost the competitive edge."

Moses Lake, who dropped the last six games, hung with Davis for seven straight innings, after getting beat up in the first game by Clausen. Clausen finished the game with 10 strike outs.

Davis put up four runs in the first two innings and added some insurance in the top of the sixth. Moses Lake scored its only run of the game by Jeremy Martinez who scored on a Pirates error committed by Clausen, leading to the 5-1 win for Davis.

Derek Shoemaker controlled the mound for Moses Lake in the second game, allowing three runs in the third innings, but holding strong the final four innings of the game.

"He had the same velocity he had in the seventh as he did in the first," Kies said. "He can pitch and has a really tough mentality too and that is what separates him from other pitchers with the same stuff."

Moses Lake got on the board first in the second game. Brady Coker singled in the second inning, followed by Isaac Goodrich and scored on Kyle Wilmot's single to center field.

Davis answered back with three runs in the top of the third, but Moses Lake continued to plug away at ######. The Chiefs added another run in bottom of the fifth on a throwing error by the third baseman and tied the game in the sixth on an error by first baseman.

Hill came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and took a 1-2 pitch to deep left field for the win. Hill's previous three at bats resulted in a walk and two hit-by-pitch situations.

"He's been getting pitched tough and he might be pressing a little bit and he is a good hitter and eight games now, it takes awhile to get going and you look at statistics over 20 or 40 games and not just five or six games," Kies said.

Shoemaker finished the game with nine strike outs, but faced a jam in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Shoemaker got Josh Murrillo to pop out foul to the first base side of the field where Hill made a reaching catch over the out-of-play fence lining the right side.

Moses Lake currently sits 2-6 on the season and ended a six-game losing streak with the second win in the doubleheader. According to Hill, hopefully the home run struck life back in the Chiefs' bats.

"I hope so and I think so," Hill added. "Anything that is going to get these guys excited because they need to get excited."
