Vote yes on April 27 school levy

| April 8, 2004 9:00 PM

Our children are our future. Without support from the community, they will have a difficult time reaching their full potential. The failure of the recent Moses Lake School District Maintenance and Operation Levy was hard for me to understand.

Since the levy failure, I have spoken with many people who either didn't vote or voted no. I keep asking the question "why?" The answers are anywhere from "we already pay too many taxes" to "I don't like the way thing are going at the district or with the teachers."

This levy will replace the levy that was approved in 2002. This is not a new tax. This levy will cost $3.45 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2005 and 2006. The current levy is being collected at the rate of $3.36.

If you don't like the way the money is being spent, get involved. By simply voting no, you are not contributing to the improvement of the education of the children of Moses Lake. Our children need this community. They need us to support the physical education, music and math programs this levy provides.

For those of you who think you are paying too many taxes, I don't have the answer. I can only say that you get what you pay for. If we are not willing to pay for the education of our youth, they will fall behind.

Why should that matter to you? Maybe it doesn't. But next time you are out in the public, stop and watch all the children you see under the age of 15 and remember what your education did for you.

Our children require that same opportunity. Vote yes on the school levy on April 27.
