There's lots to love about meatloaf
Meatloaf
Meatloaf is a favorite comfort food. It’s satisfying and it’s easy to make. It doesn’t need to be boring as there are limitless variations on it. It’s a great way to experiment with new flavor combinations and add surprises. But I think my favorite part of a meatloaf is the sandwiches the next day.

Dave Graybill: The Fishin' Magician
One of my many favorite memories of fishing when I was just a youngster is about a day spent on Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee. My Dad took my brother and sister and some cousins along to do some perch fishing. He rented a big row boat and after paddling out to a likely spot on the lake handed us each a reel. He had stripped off enough line to get the baited hook and sinker to the bottom. He told us that when we got a bite to pull the line in hand over hand and then pull the fish into the boat. He was pretty smart. Having a boat load of kids whipping their rods around would have been a nightmare. We filled a gunny sack with fat perch that day. This was over 50 years ago and I still remember it clearly. Make you own memories with your kids and get up to Fish Lake. The perch are biting and it is a great way to spend a summer morning. Fortunately the limit is now 25 perch at Fish Lake. I think my Dad had to deal with about 300 fish back then. Poor guy.

Fresh News From MarDon
Bass fishing has been very effective in the Sand Dunes, finding current flows, beaver huts and underwater wood & weed lines. Crab Creek continues to produce an amazing amount of 2 to 4 pound largemouth. Many serious anglers are catching and releasing largemouth over 6 lbs this past week. Remember to always use extreme caution when boating in the Sand Dunes area. Smallmouth and some largemouth bass have been good on the face of O’Sullivan Dam. Some great smallmouth reports are coming from the Goose Island area. Be alert to the rock piles between Goose Island and Hwy 262. The Lind Coulee has had some good smallmouth reports, also.

Janet Lucinda Cindy Mancillas
Janet Lucinda “Cindy” Mancillas nèe Adriance, a longtime resident of San Francisco’s Mission District, passed away peacefully holding her granddaughter Lucienne’s hand on August 8, 2016 after a brief illness. The second of four children, Cindy was born in Napa, Calif. to George and Neva Adriance. The family relocated to Moses Lake, Wash., where she enjoyed her childhood and high school years. Cindy and her younger sister, Dorie, moved to “the big city” in 1954 where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in history at San Francisco State University. Soon after, she met and married Richard Mancillas, raising five children and divorcing after 20 years. Cindy supported her family by working as a legal secretary and, eager for intellectual challenge, obtained her master’s degree in social work. She had a thriving therapy practice, which continued well past retirement. Many considered her degree a formality, since she generously listened and gave sage advice to countless people for many years before. Aside from a keen intellect and dry wit, friends and family will remember Cindy’s compassionate heart, having always opened her home as refuge to those in need throughout the decades.

My tribe and my disciples: the joy of connecting
A few weeks ago, I took time out of my crazy schedule to get away for an annual “girlfriends weekend” in McCall, Idaho. There are seven of us “girls” who worked our way through Boise State University by waiting tables together at the ChartHouse restaurant. We are a group of women who have been friends for more than 25 years, love good food, late night conversations and laughing until we cry. We are a diverse group of women married to an even more diverse group of men. One of the husbands is a pastor at a megachurch with over 20,000 members; two of the husbands are atheists. One girlfriend is a staunch Democrat while one is a staunch Republican, the rest of us fall somewhere in the middle. We are all at different stages of life. One girlfriend has a 2-year-old while another has children in their mid-twenties. Together, over the past 25 years we have experienced success, joy, pain and failure. We have celebrated our marriages, walked through a couple of divorces, remarriages, childbirth, addiction, our kids’ first day of school and now our children graduating from high school and college.
It's good to get away
Sitting in the doctor’s office the other day, I was reading a magazine to pass the time. The article that caught my eye was one on vacationing.

Curtis Joseph Austin
Husband, father and teacher Curtis Joseph Austin passed away peacefully at home in Moses Lake on August 16, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 5, 1933 in Missoula, Mont. to Curt James Austin and Mary Monahan Austin. Curt was the sixth of seven children. His father converted to Catholicism in order to marry his mother, and Curt was proud of his Irish Catholic heritage. His father owned a general store, the “C.J. Austin Co.” in Missoula for many years. The store, where Curt grew up, has been named to the historic register. He graduated from high school in Missoula, and after working for a number of months at the Mercantile (a local department store), decided college was preferable to working, enrolling at the last minute at what was then Montana State University, since renamed University of Montana. He confessed to his family that he was a somewhat indifferent student in high school, which everyone finds funny given his lifelong love of reading and learning. After completing a degree in business, Curt was drafted and joined the Navy in 1955. He spent nearly two years in the Pacific, spending much of his time at sea reading history and literature from the Yorktown’s library, including Herman Melville’s “Billy Budd,” citing that as one of his inspirations for becoming a teacher. He returned to Missoula after a short stint as a clerk at the State Department, and pursued a master’s degree in education.

How can anyone back Trump after assassination threat?
I’m not a reporter or a public figure but it doesn’t take a person of intelligence to know that Donald Trump made a threat to Hillary Clinton on national TV to be taken out, assassinated. How desperate are Republicans that back such a nominee for president? This is no joke; throughout history we’ve lost great men: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. Stop making excuses for such a man.
'Death tax' fears rooted in myth

Don't blame media for Trump's problems
Donald Trump blames the media and he called the media biased and corrupt. I guess you have to find someone to blame when you’re losing. The media’s not corrupt; they’re just doing their job under the First Amendment and exposing lies and truth. So Donald Trump, it’s not the media’s fault you’re failing, it’s the voters who see you for who you are and who you will become if you become president. Blue-ribbon cookies for all tastes
Blue-Ribbon Cookies
As you read this, the Grant County Fair will have started, and those of us who judge baked goods at the fair will have had the opportunity to taste all the entries this year to award ribbons. My favorites are always the cookies. When I started judging at the fair 23 years ago, I was assigned the kids cookie section. I handled 144 entries that day. I had the chance to see beginning bakers on their first attempts at baking (likely with Mom or Dad) to teenagers who have free range in the kitchen to do whatever they want. Yes, some were better than others, but I learned that you try and encourage the kids to do better, if needed, with helpful suggestions, rather than listing out any faults with no comments.

Finding encouragement in a discouraging world
When I was growing up our source of news came from the three major television stations. The local news aired first with the national news immediately following. If you missed the afternoon airing, you could catch the late night news. Otherwise, you were out of luck. There was also a morning paper, but I quickly skipped to the sports and comics pages. I was not exposed to a lot of outside news and events. I did not have a major concern beyond getting out and doing my own thing.

Fresh News from MarDon
Bass fishing on Potholes Reservoir has been great. Our water level on Potholes is beginning to go down. Current water level as of today is 1034.65 and will be dropping at 2/10 per day. On Aug. 8 I went bass fishing on the Potholes and drove my walleye boat to the Job Corps dike, which hasn’t been possible since after Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980. Our farmers didn’t buy irrigation water because of the volcanic ash which sealed in moisture. With our unusually high water on Potholes many largemouth in the dunes are putting on additional weight. Many beaver huts near the Job Corps dike are filled with a vast number of new bluegill, crappie and perch under 1 1/2 inches in length, plus an amazing number of three- to four-inch largemouth bass. Each beaver hut looks like an aquarium, with an overabundance of feed.

Dear Mr. Trump...
As a veteran chaplain of the United States Army for 10 years, I was offended by your flippant remarks concerning some of our brave citizens who have been involved with the great military services of our country. “Offended” is not strong enough; I was really appalled. Especially by the way you chose to attack the Muslim family who had obviously experienced more pain and suffering than you could even possibly ever conceive.

Shaul started in the seed lab right out of college and "loved it" and has never left.

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation is an especially versatile choice when it comes to modernizing these older homes. A woman's I's
The best way to evaluate a woman is by her “I’s” – Intelligence and Integrity. The same holds true for evaluating men. My work, when I was in the aerospace industry, often involved classified material. One job included comparing work done by other engineers to the security classification manual to properly mark each paragraph (Unclassified, Confidential, Secret, etc.). The engineers knew the overall security, but needed each paragraph marked.

Trump unfit for presidency
America, be prepared. Trump has created so much drama around the world, not only with government officials but with world leaders all over. The Republican Party created Trump. I don’t know what kind of species, one with no heart or values for Americans.
Trumps' opponents are destructive and dishonest
I see Trump road or yard signs but they immediately disappear or are defaced. Seems the Hillary fans spend their energy defacing, ripping, and stealing the Republicans’ Trump signs. Instead of doing their own work of promoting their candidate they use their time to destroy that of the opposition and deny us our free speech. Volunteers work hard distributing these signs and they cost money. It is illegal to destroy them or take them, especially if you go on to someone’s private property.
Support Israel over Russia
Both parties, Republicans and Democrats, should be suspicious and concerned that Donald Trump and the Russian president have become close friends. Russia is an enemy and a threat to Israel’s security. Russia mistreats women and kills gays. There’s nothing good about Russia and only a fool will trust Russia.

NOTICE OF FILING WITH FEDERAL ENERGY REGULATORY COMMISSION
Columbia Basin Hydropower (CBHP), hereby provides notice of its filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) of (1) the Notice of Intent (NOI) for the Banks Lake Pumped Storage Project (FERC No. 14329, (2) the Pre-Application Documents (PADs), and (3) a Request to use the Traditional Licensing Process (TLP) under 18 CFR Section 5.3. CBHP is seeking an original license from the Commission for the Project. The proposed Project is located on Banks Lake and Franklin D. The Project would be located on federal lands owned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and will utilize the existing Banks Lake and Roosevelt Lake and North Dam. Additionally, CBHP proposes to construct a new powerhouse, penstock, and transmission line. The Project installed capacity is anticipated to be 500 MW (scalable to 1,000 MW), and the preliminary estimate for average annual generation is 769,600 MWH.

The Project installed capacity is anticipated to be 500 MW (scalable to 1,000 MW), and the preliminary estimate for average annual generation is 769,600 MWH. The NOI provides notice of CBHP's intent to apply for an original license for the Projects. The PAD summarizes relevant and available information regarding the Projects description and operation along with discussions of the potential effects of continued Project operation on environmental and cultural resources. The PAD is available for inspection at 457 1 st Avenue NW Ephrata WA, 98823 and also available at FERC's elibrary: http://www.ferc.gov/docs-filings/elibrary.asp.html. (reference docket number P-14329). The project is a source of clean, renewable energy which lessens the country's dependence on fossil resources for power generation. The request to use the TLP is based on the belief that the TLP will be the most appropriate process due to the following: \u2022 Likelihood of timely license issuance: CBHP believes that using the TLP will provide local, state and federal agencies with a manageable timeframe and assist FERC to issue a timely license for the Project. In addition, because the Project subject to securing both a FERC license and a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Lease of Power Purchase, the TLP provides for more flexibility for coordination in work load and schedule between the two regulatory processes. \u2022 Complexity of the resource issues and level of anticipated controversy: Throughout this pre PAD consultation process, CBHP has not identified resource issues that appear complex or controversial; it is anticipated that the collaborative nature of the TLP process will facilitate resolution of identified issues in a timely manner. \u2022 Relative cost of the traditional process compared to the integrated process: CBHP believes that the use of the TLP will allow completion of a license application in less time and, therefore, for less cost, than use of the Integrated Licensing Process. \u2022 The amount of available information and potential for significant disputes over studies: CBHP believes that there is sufficient information available on many resource areas in the existing environment surrounding the Project, as presented in the PAD. CBHP acknowledges that some resource areas will require further study and will supplement existing information with additional studies developed through consultation with state and federal resource agencies. \u2022 The TLP will allow CBHP to coordinate a duel regulatory process with the Bureau of Reclamation's Lease of Power Purchase process . The ILP would not lend the flexibility necessary to navigate and coordinate these two regulatory processes. Given all of the factors discussed above, CBHP considers the TLP to be the most appropriate means to obtain an original license for the hydroelectric project. CBHP invites resource agencies, Indian tribes, and members of the public interested in the proceedings to participate in the relicensing and to comment on this notice and related matters. Mailings on this Project can be sent to Columbia Basin Hydropower, 457 1 st Avenue NW, (P.O. Box 219) Ephrata WA, 98823, to the attention of Tim Culbertson, Secretary-General Manager Comments on the use of the TLP are due within 30 days of filing of the request to use the TLP (on or before August 29, 2016). Comments must reference Project number P-14329 and should address, as appropriate to the circumstances of the request, the: (A) Likelihood of timely license issuance; (B) Complexity of the resource issues; (C) Level of anticipated controversy; (D) Relative cost of the traditional process compared to the integrated process; (E) The amount of available information and potential for significant disputes over studies; and (F) Other factors believed by the commenter to be pertinent. Respondents must submit an electronic filing pursuant to Sec. 385.2003(c) at http://www.ferc.gov/docs-filing/efiling.asp or an original and eight copies of their comments to the Office of Secretary, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, 888 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20426. #08015/5241369 Pub: July 28, 2016 & August 3, 2016

Take a stab at grilling kebabs
Kebabs
Kebabs are a great way to grill vegetables and meats on the grill. The stick allows you to easily move the food around or to flip it over to further cooking on the other side. If you have no grill, you could use the broiler in your oven. If doing so, you might have to leave the door ajar, so as to allow the broiler to stay on full-time, instead of having the thermostat cycle the broiler on and off when the oven reaches a certain temperature.

Arizona county considers Ban on New Irrigation
KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona county is considering a ban on irrigation to slow the rate of loss from its aquifer. The Kingman Daily Miner reports that the Mohave County Board of Supervisors has agreed to work with the Arizona Department of Water Resources on a process that could prevent new irrigation in the Hualapai Valley basin.Supervisor Steve Moss says designating the basin an Irrigation Non-Expansion Area would prevent new land from being irrigated but would not restrict how much water can be drawn from existing wells. The INA wouldn't apply to residential wells or small farms.Moss says he is concerned about a prediction that Kingman will be without water in the next 30 to 70 years and hopes the INA will buy time for Kingman to find a solution.
