Rice dishes better than anything from a box
Nearly everyone has tried that famous named boxed rice side dish. You know, the one that features the cable car from that city in California. Did you know it is really easy to make, without the aid of the box? In fact, with a little practice, this is one of those recipes you can start to make without a recipe. I actually made up a batch off the top of my head once and found I had made a tastier version than I had ever found out of the box. I think the biggest difference is the fresh flavors of the background vegetables, versus the dried and powdered versions in the flavor packet. I‘ve also noted a few recipes online that have no veggies at all. They rely on powdered garlic and dried parsley to do the job that carrots, onion and celery do in my version.

Bond best option for community growth
I applaud and support the Moses Lake School District’s school bond proposal for the construction of a second high school, remodeling MLHS, and construction of an 11th-grade school. One of the few downsides of a growing, vibrant community is the need to provide services, like schools, in a timely manner. It can be daunting, but good schools are a key component of a thriving community.

Vote 'yes' on school bond
I encourage the Moses Lake community to support the School District Bond proposal to provide additional school facilities for our students by voting “yes” on Feb. 14. The problems of a growing enrollment include providing adequate and appropriate school facilities for all students in the Moses Lake School District. Our school directors and staff of educational administrators have studied the problems of space, economy, and sound learning environment for our students and have proposed the current bond proposition to meet these needs for the current and future students. Citizen support is necessary to fulfill this essential educational need.
Bails set in Jill Sundberg homicide case
GEORGE — Bails for the five men who were arrested in connection with the December death of Jill Sundberg have been set.
Moses Lake schools need to keep up with growth
In the spring of 1970 – 46 years-eight months, 560 months, 17,030 days ago – our family moved to the small community of Moses Lake. At that time, the only businesses across the Alder Street Fill were Chico’s Pizza and Lake Bowl. Broadway, Wheeler Road and others were two lanes. New houses, apartments and businesses are springing up all over Moses Lake and the surrounding area. Businesses contemplating coming to any area consider the quality of the educational system, which in turn brings jobs and tax dollars.
School expansion should be a priority
Let me be clear: I believe it is both a privilege and an obligation to promote and support education in our community. Our strength, our future, and our prosperity are in our educated children. What better investment can we choose than the priority and support of schools and community education?
Taxes are out of control
First and foremost I want to thank the Columbia Basin Herald for the editorial part of the newspaper. Where taxpayer citizens can express their views. I am a retired person on a fixed income and to my shock I received a Notice of Change of Assessed Value for my property. It went up $16,250 dollars. I have not made any improvements in over five years. When I showed my realtor, she too was shocked, but informed me I had missed the deadline to appeal. Now the Moses Lake School District wants more tax money even though we taxpayers have not yet paid off the last two taxes, the City of Moses Lake wants to raise taxes, and the PUD wants to raise rates too. It is my understanding that most of the city and school administrators don‘t even live inside City limits. Oh well, as a 70-year-old retired person, who lives on a fixed income, I will do what I can do to meet my tax obligations. But as for voting for more taxes I say no.
School bond is important to our community
Everyone knows there is a school bond issue coming before the citizens of the Moses Lake School District. Everyone knows that Moses Lake High School is overcrowded. Everyone knows that building new schools is expensive. Everyone knows that there are people who will always vote for a school bond. Everyone knows that some people will always vote against a school bond. What everyone does not seem to know is that the future of our community, our state, and our country, is dependent on the education of our children. Education is not just what happens at school, but what happens in a community to further learning, discovery, and experimentation.

Cost of school bond is little compared to return
Friends and neighbors in the Moses Lake School District, Feb. 14 is a day we express our love to a special person in our life, but this upcoming Valentine’s Day you will have the opportunity to show some love in another way. The Moses Lake School District is running a capital projects bond for the construction of a second high school, upgrades to the current high school and a new elementary school.
School board president answers bond questions
I proudly serve as president of the Moses Lake School Board of Directors. As five volunteers elected to serve as board members we are leaders and champions for public education in the Moses Lake community. Now, more than ever, I encourage you to involve yourself in the education of our community’s future. Please take the time to learn more about the Feb. 14 bond election and vote in support of the students of our community for years to come.
New high school is too expensive
Well it is that time again for the Moses Lake School Board to try to pass the most expensive school bond in the history of the Columbia Basin. It doesn’t matter that the voters have already voted it down twice before. It is always easier to keep running the same bond than to alter the cost or solve the crowding problem any other way besides building a second high school. I have been an educator for 36 years in three states at all levels, and the idea of two medium-sized public high schools in a town the size of Moses Lake seemed strange, so I thought I would research other similar-size towns with two public high schools. There is only one problem – there are none in the entire Northwest. There are two very simple reasons. First, mid-sized towns don’t like dividing the allegiance of their patrons if they don’t absolutely have to. The second obvious reason is high schools are very expensive to build, operate, and maintain. They are way more costly than middle or elementary schools. They require very large staffs including administrators that are not fully funded by the state. Support, technology, and maintenance personnel would have to be doubled. High schools are huge open spaces including gyms, locker-rooms, auditoriums, cafeterias, libraries, tech labs, etcetera that cost a fortune to heat, cool, and maintain. The future M&O levies would have to be increased greatly. We would have to double the budget for all extra-curricular activities which includes coaches, advisors, transportation, uniforms, equipment and facilities upkeep. Don’t forget all the extra sports fields and parking lots required. Just look at other communities like Wenatchee, Walla Walla, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Lewiston, Sunnyside, Hermiston, Lake Stevens, Monroe, Shelton, Port Angeles, Mt. Vernon and many more that have just one public high school.

MOSES LAKE — The much anticipated opening of WinCo Foods in Moses Lake means 170 new jobs are coming to the Columbia Basin.
School bond: a great way to support critical areas in need
Our student population in Moses Lake continues to grow every year. The overcrowded elementary schools have required creativity in using current space. At Peninsula Elementary, the music class is now conducted on a stage adjoining the gym, rather than a classroom. At other schools, computer labs have been removed to provide needed class space, portables have been placed onsite, and split assemblies are conducted.
Let's evaluate what we get for our education dollars
Sixty years ago classes were larger; teachers were treated with respect. There were few additional helpers in classrooms. Teachers can’t force knowledge into skulls. At best, all teachers do is inspire and guide students. Technology facilitates teachers handling larger class sizes by grading tests, preparing class materials, etcetera.
Expand schools to keep them serving the community well
We are writing this letter in support of the MLSD bond election. We are proud members of the Moses Lake community and Moses Lake School District. Together, we have worked for the district for a combined total of over 60 years. During that time we raised all four of our children here, all of whom have gone on to successful careers thanks to the foundation that they received in Moses Lake. Now, we have two grandchildren who will soon be school age and attending schools in the MLSD.

Better breakfast at a fraction of the price
I like those breakfast sandwiches with sausage, egg, and cheese that you can get at certain drive-through restaurants in town. Trouble is, they always seemed so high priced to me. Last time I checked, you could get one for $2.79 for just the sandwich. A quick bit of unscientific research found that I could buy a frozen 4 pack of them made by a well-known sausage company for $6.69 at the local megamart. My problem with those started with the English muffins not being toasted, nor were they buttered. The meat was just cooked through, as was the egg, so both were bland in their own ways. This was just like the drive through version, though the English muffin there had at least a dab of “butter” on them. Of course, both had American cheese, which, given a bit of heat, melts into a gooey salty substance. Could I do better at home, for a comparable price?

Bond costs only the beginning

Vote 'yes' on the school bond
Letters to the Editor on Jan. 12, 2017 published a letter from a writer asking people to “vote ‘no’ on this very expensive Moses Lake school bond.” They listed the cost of the bond proposal and the property taxes that will have to be collected as a reason to vote “no.” But nowhere in the letter does the writer address the reason for the bond – our children (or grandchildren in my case). What does the writer think we should do about our growing enrollment rate? Where should we house those students? In what environment should we try to educate our kids, prepare them for college and jobs? Class sizes are regulated by law, so we can’t just cram 50 kids to a room and call it good. The cost of building schools is not going to go down. The task of finding property on which to build schools is not going to get any easier with the restrictions of Urban Growth Management. Is it going to cost me in property taxes? Yes, it is – but I believe the children of our city deserve to have a learning environment that will help them grow into concerned citizens.
