Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

Friday, October 25th

My wife's sister Karen Heim was visiting from Anaconda, Montana, and they had planned on spending Wednesday riding bikes on the trail in Wenatchee. Somehow, over dinner the idea of going steelhead fishing came. It was actually my wife's idea. So in the morning the three of us headed north. We made a stop in Pateros to get her a license and then we pulled the boat to Bridgeport. I was shocked. We were the only boat on the water. I figured the Blow Hole would be an automatic. Not. We then made some drifts at the Pines and got a salmon and a couple of triploids. Our next stop was the bridge and we hooked a few triploids over there. Finally, at the very bottom end of the drift I hooked another fish and handed the rod to Karen. She had landed all the triploids but could tell she had something else on the line. It turned out to be a steelhead of about 8 pounds, and it was a hatchery fish! We kept the fish whole so she could show it off to her husband Ed when she got home. Getting her first steelhead was real thrill that we all enjoyed.

Political pundit, Norm Ornstein, says our American society has become a tribal society. We have divided ourselves into camps of like-minded people who see everyone outside our camp as enemies. "If you're for it, I'm against it," is the thinking that characterizes tribalism. We end up speaking past other people, not to other people.

Reader believes I-517 hurts Washington

As Washingtonians, we value and respect the initiative and referendum process as one of our most important democratic tools. I-517 aims to make reforms to this process and, by using deceptive and ambiguous language, deceives voters into thinking that these reforms are about protecting the democratic process. The truth is that this is a deeply flawed initiative written by a few people all of whom stand to increase their profits if this passes. It is riddled with negative unintended consequences and is a bad idea for Washington businesses and citizens.

Reader wants voters to consider voting yes EMS levy

For those of you that live in rural areas surrounding Ephrata, you probably realize that you are in Grant County Fire District 13. This month you will be receiving an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levy ballot in the mail. Passage of this levy is critical in order to allow District 13 to continue to provide rapid and professional EMS response to you and our fellow citizens. This levy will fund EMS response for 6 years and cost a property owner with a $100,000 home $4.16/month. That is a small price to pay for the safety of your family and neighbors. Remember, District 13 is completely staffed by volunteer responders. I urge you to take the time and vote yes for the District 13 EMS levy.

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

I am going to blame the warm weather for the luke warm opening of the steelhead season here in our area. If you look at the dam counts, there are plenty of fish around, but the bite was very slow, from what I saw while fishing near Pateros. My fishing buddy Rollie Schmitten and I tried a couple of spots in the estuary of the Methow River to start with, and only heard of a couple of fish caught when speaking to other boaters and bank anglers. We then headed down to The Rocks, and may have had a hit or two but gave that up and ran to the other side of the Columbia and tried a "sure thing" drift over there. Once again we may have had hit, but left with nothing to show for our efforts. I decided to pull the boat and head for Bridgeport. We did find two anglers that had two hatchery fish at the launch. After making some long drifts at the Blow Hole and the Bridge, we jumped to the Pines, and here we each got a fish, including one hatchery keeper. Whew. It was a near thing, but we avoided a skunk.

Reader believes veterans and tax payers deserve better

"The gleaming temples of Democracy that tourists visit in Washington (D.C.), the marble shrines to great leaders and great ideals, are no longer an appropriate emblem for the nation's capital. Washington (D.C.) now is more aptly visualized as a grand bazaar - a steamy marketplace of tents, stalls, and noisy peddlers. The din of buying and selling drowns out patriotic music." (William Grieder, author, Who Will Tell the People: The Betrayal of American Democracy, April 1992.)

Reader noticed new location serving liquor

I walk every morning and noticed at the new Old Town Coffee House just completed at the corner of Evelyn and Central Drive, the windows display several notices indicating that a liquor license is being requested. Since it has not yet opened, it seems that this may have been in the original business plan. As it will be situated adjacent to a City soccer field and just across from the big Paul Lauzier Baseball and Soccer fields, this seems to be an odd location. However The Paul Lauzier Field draws many kids tournaments to this location so this could be an attraction for the parents for if they find themselves: cold, hot, wet, or bored, they could wile away the time at the bar and then drive the children home after the games. This could also be a precedent for locating other liquor locations near parks and schools for the parents convenience.

Moses Lake defeats Eastmont in four games

It was an important win for the Chiefs on Tuesday night on their home court against Big 9 rival Eastmont. The 3-1 victory kept Moses Lake in the hunt for the postseason as they remained in third place behind Wenatchee and Eisenhower by improving their conference record to .500 with a 3-3 record. Down the stretch contending with Eisenhower (6-0 in league) and Wenatchee (5-1 in league) will be no easy task, but with the momentum building it is not out of the question now.

Othello falls to Ellensburg in CWAC showdown

For Ellensburg the past two weeks were their true test of the season, and they passed with flying colors. The Bulldogs took on the other two state ranked teams in the CWAC back-to-back and came away victorious both times, in the process letting the rest of the state know they are for real. For Othello, coming off a win over Ephrata in a hard fought back and forth game, and having already lost to rival Prosser earlier in the season, this showdown with Ellensburg had massive implications for how their 2013 campaign would turn out. Unfortunately, and a bit ironically, the Bulldogs were just too fast for the Huskies; all night long, on both sides of the ball, they were the faster team and the quickness of the edge and pure speed in the open field created big plays in route to a 31-14 win.

My husband and I took our dog to Moses Lake to visit family. The breakfast was awesome. The belgaim waffles were great, biscuits and gravy, omelets, sausage patties, cereal, crossants and more. It was really hot there and I was able to leave my dog in our room while we ran some errands. The people were very nice. I will definetely stay here again in a heart beat. The rooms were very clean. The only negative is you can smell cigarettes in the hallways.

Ponch H - "I'd stay here again."

I made a last minute decision to travel to Moses Lake. I original thought was to camp. But as I was losing my race with darkness. 2 hours away I called for a room. All AmeriStay had were smoking rooms. I took one. I am not a smoker. You could have fooled me that this was a smoking room. A trace of smoke inthe hall corridor. I very faint hint in the room, if that. I decided to stay another night and even though they had a non-smoking room available, I chose to stay in the room I had. Good breakfast the next morning. Eggs, sausage, make your own waffle

James S - "Great Place for the Price"

As a certified BBQ judge with the PNWBA I visit a variety of places throughout the Pacific North West. As a volunteer I pay my own expenses and I'm always looking for an inexpensive place to stay but I still want clean, quiet and safety. This facility offers all three and a free breakfast to boot. The Inn is kind of tucked into the back of a large parking lot so you have to watch carefully for it. My room was very clean and comfortable. I got a non-smoking room on the second floor. I always take the top floor because I'm unwilling to deal with someone in the room overhead stomping around or kids running around loose overhead. Anyway, they were able to accommodate me and the room was truly a non-smoking one. Not one of those wanna-b rooms where they just call it non-smoking today but yesterday and for the past 2 years it was a smoking room. I absolutely hate that stinking sour odor that hits you in the face the moment you open the door. No matter this place was great! There is a nice indoor pool which looks very clean from what I saw and is just offf the lobby. Lots of folks were enjoying it while I was there. The reception desk was manned by a very polite, helpful and friendly young lady who had me checked in quickly and hassle free. I have to comment of the free breakfast. They provide the usual obligatory cold cereal and the provervial waffel maker but they also have chaffing dishes with small egg omlets stuffed with ham and cheese and another with real Biscuits and sausage gravy yummm! They offer the BEST free breakfast I've ever seen in a place with this price point. Good job team! Overall I'd say add this Inn to your list of options if you're ever traveling alon I-90 through Moses Lake, WA and need a place to stay.

pedalawayWA - "Excellent Stay for a Budget Hotel"

We stayed here for one night and was quite satisfied with the clean room and friendly service. It is just a budget hotel, so don't expect high end furnishings, but if you need a place to stay that is clean, allows a decent night's sleep, and is not too expensive, I'd recommend this hotel in Moses Lake. The location is a little funky because it is behind a casino/bowling alley, but that posed no problems. The breakfast was free and ok.

We stayed for 2 nights-wanted a value hotel that would take more than 2 children in the room. This place is excellent. The rooms were clean, the staff was very accommodating and very nice, the breakfast was great, and the pool was great. It was also very close to the water park and all the food you could possibly want. There is a bowling alley and arcade within walking distance. Great place for families! Will go back again next summer. Stayed August 2013, travelled with family

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill
October 5, 2013 6 a.m.

Fishin' Magician: Dave Graybill

Fishing for fall salmon continues to be very good in the Hanford Reach, with three-fish limits possible below Priest Rapids Dam. Anglers are trolling Super Baits, both the standard and the Plug Cut style in the deeper holes. In the faster, shallower water you will see anglers using jet divers and back trolling them with either cured eggs or plug cut herring on behind. It is also possible to back bounce eggs or herring in this same water, using 10- to 12-ounce cannon ball sinkers on a drop release. I have heard of some very large kings taken in this stretch of the Columbia, but most of the fish I have caught or have seen caught top out in the low twenties. Some of them have been very bright, too, as there are more fresh fish coming all the time. On Monday, October 16th there will be some anglers moving their operations further north to take advantage of the steelhead season that opens on that day. The main stem Columbia, Wenatchee, Methow and Okanogan rivers will all be open to steelhead fishing at that time. I imagine early hot spots will be at the mouth of the Wenatchee and the estuary and mouth of the Methow.
