Helen Mildred Anderson
Helen was born July 7, 1918 on a homestead halfway between Twin Bridges and Sheridan, Montana, the sixth of seven children. Her father, Frank Spinner, died when she was very young. Raised by her widowed mother, Clara J. Spinner, she finished her second year of high school then had to drop out in order to earn a living. She worked in various places around Twin Bridges, including Woodward's Department Store and the Bee Factory. At the factory, Helen worked over a big tub where honey was extracted from honey combs, placed in gallon jars, and then personally delivered to each customer. She also made milk shakes at a creamery and cleaned people's homes. Helen then moved to Bozeman, Montana with her sister Alice and purchased a "whippet car." There Helen met her future husband, Clifford Anderson, while eating lunch with Alice at the PMA office of the government building where Clifford worked. They had two sons, Byron and Bruce. The family moved to Overland Park, Kansas in the mid-sixties, then to Moses Lake, Washington in the early seventies where she lived until her death.

Reader suggests overcrowding solution
I was at last secondary overcrowding meeting that Rebecca Milligan attended and it is with interest that I read the letter to the editor written by her. It seems to me that going to a 6 period day would help take the issue of overcrowding from a crisis status to a "needs to be addressed" status. By switching from a four period day to a six period day the district could accommodate approximately 8.3 percent more students with the same number of teachers and classrooms, without incurring significant cost. The key is that with a four period day, 25 percent of the teachers have a planning period at any given time. By switching to a six period day that number drops to 16.7 percent. This solution could be incorporated with other measures, such as shifting the ninth grade to the junior highs and the sixth grade to the elementary schools, to come up with a cost effective temporary solution.

Reader supports CBSS
I have in the past had the pleasure of being a high school and middle school tutor at Columbia Basin Secondary School. It was a good experience and I loved the kids with all my heart. I fear for the students and many teachers over the potential school closing. It is a possible grave injustice to them and the whole community. CBSS as it is known is a special school where kids that might be seen as the one's that fall through the cracks can survive and even thrive. Not all the kids fit this role. And I can remember some that just needed a little more attention in the halls or in the after school study hall. The School board will displace good kids who have been bullied or seen rejection of a system that harbors arrogance and conformity to peer pressure with a wave of the pen. I appreciate the many successful under takings of students, teachers and administrators from all the Moses Lake School District's schools. Why is it that the kids who need and get more looking after the most are on the chopping block?

Fresh news from MarDon
Waterfowl season has finished. As the 2012-2013 three and one half month journey began I must admit I had a subtle feeling of dread. Those early cold mornings, trying to hunt in the fog....... However as the last nine days began I found myself wishing the season would last longer. Those south winds with flight after flight of quality mallards, allowing limit level shooting, watching geese being coaxed to our decoys, witnessing the first beautiful morning light and especially helping a new hunter enjoy a prime hunt that they will hopefully never forget. I have many wonderful memories from this season that will stay with me and I look forward, impatiently, for next season to begin.

Spring-like temperatures again teasing
Again we are being teased. The temperature, as this is being written, is standing at 40 degrees and this is at 4:40 p.m. It is as if a light switch had been flipped. The forecast for the next 10 days calls for lows in the high 30s and highs in the low 40s. This is much more acceptable to late-winter and early-spring fishing.

Reader protests possible CBSS closing
I'm writing in regard to CBSS possibly closing. We all need this school open to keep our kids dreams going. My son cannot attend a public school. Ever since I got him in this school, his grades have improved. His whole attitude on school has changed. Last year he had gotten suspended for these reasons: fighting (he didn't start) and bringing a condom to school. He pushed a kid off the chair to prevent getting stabbed with a pencil. He refused a class assignment. He gets expelled for skipping school. You don't expel a kid for that; it gives them what they want. The expulsion was quickly changed to a suspension. I feel my son is not wanted there by the expression I received when I went to re-register my child. Keep our kids education going. They need this school.

Gun culture in America
There is a gun culture in America. It arrived with the first pilgrims who used them to protect the community from the unforseen perils od an unexplored land. And to procure game to sustain their numbers. Bad people have always skulked in the shadows to prey on the weak, the ill-prepared and the unarmed. The original bands of roving "highwaymen" have now grown into all forms of criminal associations that don't cre what the law says. They use all forms of intimidation, coersion, violence and weapons, including guns, to get the outcome they want. As a whole, I'll call it "Thug Culture."

To the "Rulers" of the United States
I pray that neither you, your spouse, your children, grandchildren, nor the good citizens that elected you encounter the situation that I had many years ago. Three years of high school ROTC training made me recognize that a person's only protection is directly in their own hands at the time it is needed!
Reader urges reexamining of electoral college
Separate statehood? Annexing into Idaho? Secede from the Union? These are a few ideas mentioned by a frustrated electorate determined to make their voices heard. Realistically, none of them are likely to occur. So what CAN be done to achieve voter equality?
Reader wants overcrowding options explored
I don't think our community understands what is going on in our school district. I attended a meeting last week where the overcrowding issue in our schools was discussed. I was shocked to discover that only two options were being offered or discussed. Option 1- Year round School. Option 2- 11 period day for high school. Both options are unacceptable. I could go on and on about why these two options won't work, but the bottom line is they are awful. Why aren't we talking about a more reasonable solution to our overcrowding issue? I found that the school district was resistant to discuss any other ideas or options than the two I just listed for you. When we tried to share other options, we were shut down at the meeting.

Reader comments on postal service
In Regard to: Moses Lake Postal Service. We've had the same mail lady for 5 years. In that 5 years, this is the service we receive consistently from her: knocked over garbage cans from her car, she pushes them out of the way, broken mail box post also from her car hitting it, dirty crinkled mail that has dirt and grime, tire marks, and torn, packages left on top of our mail boxes in the rain, snow, or 100 degree heat. Once even left a package on the mailbox that read "Live fish". That fish died due to the hot sun boiling him because it sat on top of the mailbox where she had placed it back in July 2012.
