Anti-gun Democrats complicit in crime
It seems every time a heinous crime is committed by a criminal with a gun, the Democrats want to help criminals by taking rights of law-abiding citizens to possess the same type of weapon used, ultimately giving criminals an advantage over good citizens. For politicians to dance in the blood of innocent victims gunned down by criminals in an effort to fulfill their agendas of infringing on rights is a heinous crime in itself. Some say no one needs an AR-15, yet many law enforcement officers disagree as they have to face many weapons in serving their communities. Why should law-abiding citizens be put at any more of a disadvantage when in the service of protecting their families?

My introduction to parfait cups was ages ago when my folks brought some pre-made Kentucky Fried Chicken ones from the restaurant that used to be at Sun Lakes State Park. They had multiple flavors of sweet ingredients in a clear cup with a foil lid, if I recall correctly. I always wanted them whenever I would visit a KFC, though the last one I got from them, years and years ago, was certainly disappointing to my more grown-up tastes. I recall the cake was more like crumbled-up pieces of sponge.

When showing the love of God, the eyes have it
“One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, at three o’clock in the afternoon. And a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate so that he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for alms. Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, ‘Look at us.’ And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, ‘I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk,’” reads Acts 3: 1-5.

Homemade sausage: preparing for the wurst
I’ve had a large supply of ground pork sitting in the freezer from a pig I butchered in 2016. It was kind of ornery, so I figured the meat might be a bit tougher. Instead of cutting out chops or doing up a ham, I ground all of the meat. I think I still have about 125 pounds of ground pork in the freezer. It was ground once with a medium-sized grinder plate, and runs less than 10 percent fat. It’s fairly lean. My intention was to make up various cured meats, but I haven’t gotten to that yet. I did come up with the need for about five pounds of breakfast sausage, so I grabbed a few packages out of the freezer to thaw.

Yellow starthistle
This week we are going to talk about yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis). Yellow starthistle has spines all around the bracts just underneath the flowers. If cattle or horses try to graze on this plant, they can get spines stuck in their mouths. It is also poisonous to horses, causing a nervous disorder called “chewing disease” (nigropallidal encephalomalacia), which is fatal once symptoms develop. Horses are the only animal known to be affected in this manner and should not be allowed to graze on yellow starthistle.

Vote 'yes' on school levy
I am writing this in request for leadership support to vote “yes” for the upcoming school levy in the Moses Lake School District. Levies last three years. Our current levy is $4.62 but in order to be in compliance with recent state law, we need to replace it with the $1.50 levy. It would be absurd to not put $3.12 back in our pocket. The state has an “equalization fund,” basically a matching fund where we will make up what we get to keep in our pockets. If we don’t pass this replacement levy, we will lose the “equalization funds” and our current MLSD reserve funds are below national average.

Growing plants from seed indoors
It’s a pretty simple process. The gardener needs good seed, soil, water, and sunlight (or some kind of light). Usually within a few days (typically five to 14) germination begins. Depending upon the plant, seeds should be started about four to 11 weeks before the last expected spring frost date (approximately May 1 in the Columbia Basin). One way to estimate when to set seedlings outside is to wait until night and day temperatures stay in the mid-50s. You may need to furnish additional warmth outdoors for warm weather plants until June. As gardeners, getting used to checking the temperature until summer is well upon us is important.

As we look around our nation, it seems like things are getting worse and chaos seems to be running rampant. We can look at school shootings, domestic terrorism and the ensuing blame game of politics and feel like there is no hope for our country. When one turns on the television and sees the media fight over who is right and who is wrong, it’s embarrassing and makes people think that things will never change.

Celebrate an ancient tradition with a Passover meal
Passover is a holiday that commemorates the liberation of the ancient Israelites from 400 years of slavery in Egypt (approximately 3,000 years ago). Since that time, the holiday has come to represent the universal value of freedom. It is the holiday where family and friends gather around the seder table to celebrate. The date of Passover is based on the Jewish calendar, which is different from the Gregorian calendar in common use, so the holiday doesn’t fall on the same dates from year to year. This year, Passover started on the night of March 30 and runs through April 7. It happened that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ happened during the Passover, which is why Easter also moves around between March and April.
