Moses Lake Scorpions cheer team earns gold
MOSES LAKE — On Saturday, the Moses Lake Scorpions competed in the Washington Special Olympics district cheer competition where they earned a gold medal in the level one group. Head Coach Kerry Aronsohn said it was great to see Moses Lake host the first ever district competition.
Coyotes 14U make deep tournament run
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Coyotes 14U squad made a deep run in the Moses Lake 14U Winter Classic, just falling short 5-3 in the championship game to the Coeur d’Alene Thunder. “It went well overall,” Head Coach Dan Niehenke said. “They were out there skating fast and playing well as a team. We saw a lot more team play, even over the last two weekends of tournaments that we've had, just further refinement and dialing in how they execute as a team.”
5th grade Jacks headed to state basketball
QUINCY — The fifth-grade Quincy Jacks girls’ basketball team qualified for the state tournament at the Podium in Spokane running from March 13-15. As the girls prepare for the tourney Head Coach Summer Keller said the girls are feeling proud to represent their small town.
Jacks 5th grade basketball team earns third in state
QUINCY — The Quincy Jackrabbits fifth-grade team finished third in the state tournament in Spokane to conclude their basketball season. The young team worked hard since October, and those efforts were rewarded as they finished as one of the top three teams in the state.
Moses Lake Tribe AAU places fourth in state tourney
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Tribe sixth-grade Amateur Athletic Union basketball team finished in the top five of the state competition that was held from March 13-15, taking fourth after a long weekend of play. “It was a great experience for our girls. We ended up placing fourth out of 29 teams in the silver division, which is solid for our team,” Head Coach Tom Howard said.
Boys Tribe 5th grade team takes third in state
MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Tribe boys fifth-grade basketball team placed third overall in the Gold Division at the state tournament this season. A strong team bond and skills built over the years have head coach Matt Ahmann confident in what the team can accomplish in the future.
Moses Lake BMX ready for another successful season
MOSES LAKE — As the spring weather rolls in, outdoor sports like BMX are kicking off their new seasons. For the Moses Lake BMX track, they are eager to build off the momentum of a successful 2025, President Jeff Niehenke said. “We are picking up where we left off last year. A lot of momentum (coming) into the spring,” Niehenke said. From track renovations to new riders leagues, the Moses Lake BMX track has a lot planned this year.
Piano students get expert guidance
MOSES LAKE — Forty-five Basin piano students participated in the Washington State Music Teachers Association’s Music Artistry Program March 27-28, according to an announcement from the association. “The students play two piano pieces, memorized or non-memorized, for the visiting artists,” said music teacher Harriet West, who had students participating in the program. “Then (the artists) write down comments and work with students at the piano.” The visiting artist was Dr. Fabio Menchetti, according to the announcement. Menchetti, a native of Lucca, Italy, is an assistant professor of piano at Washington State University. Menchetti has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Italy and the U.S., and regularly concertizes throughout the United States, both as a soloist and a chamber musician, according to his website.
Youth baseball and softball season kicks off with parade
MOSES LAKE — The youth baseball and softball season kicked off in Moses Lake with the traditional Youth Day Parade downtown Saturday morning. The parking lots at McCosh Park and the Surf ‘n Slide Water Park were filled with pickup trucks and trailers, each decorated in team colors and bearing a team of eager young players from the Moses Lake Youth Baseball Association and the Columbia Basin Girls Softball Association. The parade wound down Fourth Avenue to Division Street, jogged north to head back up Third Avenue to Ivy Avenue, then returned to where they started. “The object is just to get as many kids playing as possible,” said MLYBA vice president Leo Cortez.
Sixers 9U earn first place in Yakima tourney
MOSES LAKE — The Central Washington Sixers 9u – Lange (7-0-1) is off to a strong start to their season after going undefeated in their second tournament of the season. “The kids are doing good. It's back-to-back tournaments that we've placed very well and finished first in both tournaments. A lot of the kids, it's (their) first time experiencing a baseball tournament... a lot of unknowns of what to expect and everything else. I think they played well,” Head Coach Jameson Lange said.
