Othello Lady Huskies Tennis remains undefeated
GRANDVIEW — The Lady Huskies made it five wins in a row with a 3-2 win at East Valley March 20, and 5-0 win over the Greyhounds in Grandview Monday. The victories move Othello to 5-0 in nonleague play and give the team a firm grip atop the standings. “The East Valley girls match up well with our girls. The Red Devils won districts last year and this match will continue to remind our girls of little errors we made. Our net game was weak and we let them control it the whole way, which led to easy wins for them,” coach Robert Pruneda said. “Grandview has typically been weaker maybe because of softball and track? We’re really in a four-team race between Selah, East Valley Ellensburg and Ephrata. Most of other schools struggles two get a competitive tennis squad.”

Remember to love one another
Our lives begin with love, from the moment we hear that first heartbeat, to holding that tiny newborn, and yes to even hearing that first cry. We can’t help but love that God given miracle. We sacrifice, we teach and we build relationships. Not just with our own children but with people you grew up with, co-workers, spouses, friends and family. So why do we find it so hard to love all these people in all our lives today? John 13:34 says “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.”

Standing naked in the world
Shocking title! You are not physically without clothes in public, but your digital identity is visible and unprotected. In a way, you are standing nude in the digital world. You need clothes, that is to say, protection to absolutely control what information companies collect, use, store, sell or give away. Your digital identity, whether it represents you absolutely accurately or is totally inaccurate, is as much your own property as is your physical body.

Reflections on Easter
Easter has always been a joyous time of year for as long as I can remember. Easter celebration stretches our imagination in many ways. Eggs in many differing colors coming from a bunny is a pretty big stretch. Differentiating between reality and imaginary simplifies as we grow a little older. Understanding the true meaning of Easter is an even greater stretch and may require help of a divine nature. Easter Sunday and Resurrection Sunday coincide with each other. Easter was given as a name to disguise the true meaning of the resurrection of our Lord.
Student leader is a breath of fresh air
Kudos to Angelica Mansfield. What she did and what she said at the recent “Student Walkout” reinforced my faith in our young people. She is to be commended for taking the initiative and courage to speak to her fellow students and tell the true story of what is often the cause of school violence. She showed outstanding leadership capabilities and skills. Her parents and mentors should be very proud of how they have helped and molded her to become the strong young lady she showed during the walkout. The news seems to quickly report the bad news and not the good and wonderful things that young people are doing. Thanks to you, the Columbia Basin Herald, for sharing what this brave young lady did and had to say. It was like a breath of fresh air.

Sauerkraut is good in soup, sandwiches and more
As far back as the third century B.C., sauerkraut had been eaten by the Chinese. Roving tribes of Tartars introduced fermented cabbage to Western Europe, in the areas now known as Germany and Northern France. Workers both on the Great Wall of China and on Captain Cook's ship were fed kraut to keep them from getting scurvy. Germans gave sauerkraut its name, “sour cabbage.” About the end of the 16th century it was found that fermenting cabbage with small amounts of salt was far better than using wine. This method is still used today.

The water temperature is in the low 40’s on the main Reservoir with considerably warmer water back in the sand dunes. Why would we not build a second high school?
So why would you not build a new high school if 60 percent of your voters said ‘“let us work together and make our community a better place to live, grow, and enjoy our families and friends?” We know we have problems with our current high school but how deep are these problems? We now have approaching 8,500 students in the district with about 2,300 high school students attending a school built for about 1,600. We have limited infrastructure with an inadequate commons where our students are encouraged to leave the campus to have lunch, an auditorium that only seats 500, and a gym that seats about 1,500. These facilities are unable to support the students and adding classrooms will not improve the infrastructure’s daily ability to provide the basic education support for each student.

Grant PUD commissioners approve rate increase
EPHRATA — Grant County PUD commissioners have approved electrical rates for 2018, effective April 1. The rates were approved at the regular commission Tuesday. The vote was 3-2, with commissioners Tom Flint and Dale Walker voting no. Residential rates will increase by 1.5 percent, an estimated $1.49 per month. The actual increase depends on use. General service (class 2) rates will go up by 2.1 percent, an estimated $6.43 per month. Irrigation customers (class 3) will receive a 3.4 percent increase, about $24.65 per month. Rates for large general customers (class 7) will go up one percent, an estimated $73.85 per month. Large industrial customers (class 15) will receive a rate increase of seven-tenths of 1 percent. Industrial customers, agriculture food processors and ag boiler customers all will receive a 5 percent increase. Commissioners approved a policy in 2014 that customers would pay at least 80 percent of the cost of providing them service, and not more than 15 percent over the cost of providing service. The actual cost of service is determined by a study, originally conducted in 2014 and updated periodically. The latest study is being conducted this year. Commissioners also have approved policies establishing a 2 percent overall increase each year for 10 years, beginning in 2014. Because rate classes have different costs of service, different rate classes will see different increases. Rates, rate structure and rate increases have been the subject of a lot of discussion at commission meetings the last few years. Commissioners have, over the years, outlined their positions on rates, and they reiterated those opinions at Tuesday’s meeting. “This is always a delicate subject, when you start talking about rate increases,” said commissioner Larry Schaapman. Schaapman and commissioner Terry Brewer said they thought the rate structure was a fair way to apportion costs. Schaapman said the cost analysis method inoculates the system against outside pressure, in his opinion. Commissioner Bob Bernd said analysis indicated a 2 percent increase across the board would make the disparities worse between rate classes. Bernd said he’s been on the commission long enough to remember situations with no rate increase one year and a 6 or 8 percent increase the next year. “Went through that, didn’t like if very well.” Flint said the current regular-but-small increases are “certainly more palatable” than periodic 6 or 10 percent increases. The commission has, in his opinion, set “a worthy goal, popular or unpopular,” Bernd said. Flint said he’s not necessarily opposed to a 2 percent increase, since the PUD has generated substantial debt to upgrade the turbines and generators at Wanapum and Priest Rapids dams. But he doesn’t like the way the increases are structured, he said, with rate increases for irrigators at more than 2 percent. Farmers and ranchers helped build Priest Rapids and Wanapum, he said, and deserve consideration. Walker said he has been consistent in his opposition to rate increases as long as the PUD has a substantial cash balance. Brewer said he’s in favor of a series of small increases as a more sound business practice, in his opinion, than small or no increases followed by large increases. Because the PUD is engaged in a multi-decade - and very expensive - upgrade project, the utility needs to keep money on hand to pay some of those costs, Brewer said.

A brush with bruschetta
An easy meal around here is some form of bruschetta. The easiest version is to cut up some artisan-style bread into bite-sized pieces, gently toast them in a hot oven and top with a garlic-infused butter, some form of tomato or tomato based sauce, a thin slice of mozzarella and a fresh bit of basil. I have a thriving basil plant in a warm spot in the house over the winter just to have the fresh herb available for this. The power of prayer extends to our schools
Across the nation we have a common problem. A student writes a letter or writes on a wall and the schools go into lockdown. Students come to school carrying guns. This a problem but it’s much bigger than that. We can acknowledge him or deny him but the one that has been set free on this earth wants to kill, steal and destroy what is good and true. He has many names; most know him as “Satan.”

School safety is critical
The number of school shootings seems to have recently increased exponentially. Daily strip searches of students, staff, and visitors for guns, knives, and other weapons will not eliminate problems. Weapons are not the problem, human behavior is the problem. “Weapon free zones” create killing fields. One or two armed police officers would not stop a determined killer. They would be the first killed. Immediate defense to protect schools requires well trained teachers, staff, and parents. Legally carried concealed weapons (lethal or non-lethal) can quickly limit or prevent harm. Rapid response (seconds, not minutes) requires both well trained people and immediate access to weapons to disrupt the attack. Custom shotguns, securely stored, with ballistic bean bag ammo could disable threats with less danger to other people.
