In pursuit of the perfect pizza
I've been thinking about what can make a better pizza. Can I improve the crust? What about toppings? Pizza has a long history, longer than many people realize. The first pizzas were most likely made in prehistoric times with bread cooked on hot, flat stones. According to the Smithsonian, around 1000 years ago, herb- and spice-covered circles of baked dough, known as focaccia. This bread became popular around the Naples area of Italy. After focaccia, the Italians took the next step toward modern-day pizza, “Casa de nanza” or “take out before.” Housewives would pound out dough into a thin crust and place leftovers on to bake all day in the hot sun.

Reader appreciates CBH coverage on school bond, meeting conduct
I am grateful for the exceptionally well written and edited CBH’s stories and recordings on the School Board meetings, especially because TV news broadcasts have also taken notice and have been hitting me up via text, and furthermore inquiring about the volatile public displays. It is my hopes that the CBH stories will help dissolve the unnecessary and disrespectful interruptions from the audience, for you all and so that people like me that care to get a full picture and help where I can, don’t have to be exposed to that. I understand passion, reactions and not agreeing, and God knows we are all human, but it has been difficult for me to have to witness the rudeness, personal attacks, and constant obstructions due to disorderly conduct. Chief Kevin Fuhr reassured me that there will be continued police care for safety. It is OK for board members to have someone removed if they are causing distracting scenes. It is actually the most appropriate recourse. And yes at the last meeting the lady behind me was overly obnoxious and appeared to be intoxicated. I even gave her an excerpt on being positive. Superintendent Josh Meek’s nondisciplinary “professional guidance” letters for reguidance and a friendly reminder/warning is to be commended; especially because our state and federal laws state, “training and/or retraining, if necessary.” Thank you.

Build new school now or pay more later
I am writing to inform you, the taxpayer and the one responsible to pay for the addition of a new high school in Moses Lake. We know the public voted with a super majority of 60 percent to finance the construction of a second high school. The original high school was built in 1959 for about $2 million with the built-in seat for growth of about 500 seats. The vision for the future was correct and lasted until a remodel for about $10 million in 1996 to the current configuration. We lacked the vision we had in 1959 by cutting the gym down with 40 feet less on the east end, a decrease in the auditorium to 500 seats, and a smaller commons which the students use daily for lunch. We did not add classrooms and currently must use portable classrooms in an unsecured area for classes. We have exceeded the current capacity of the facility to provide a safe and effective learning environment and place our staff in a position to work and provide an effective service in a difficult situation. We failed as voters to build a high school in 2007 that would have cost $75 million and in 2018 that same school is costing $110 million and by waiting our money has lost over $35 million in buying power.

Secure borders are good for everybody
Is it racist to secure our borders? The answer to that question would depend upon whether a person adheres to law or uses race as an excuse to avoid the law. When it comes to the safety and security of US citizens of all color, border security should not be compromised. We are a nation of immigrants and our founding fathers gave us laws to protect all who come to the U.S. to enjoy the American dream. Therefore we are also a nation of laws. Newcomers deserve the security of closed borders. I have friends from Egypt that came here legally to escape the horrors they had witnessed there. My Egyptian friends deserve secured borders to know they won’t face the same horrors here. I also have friends that migrated here from Mexico and entered legally to escape the poverty and dangers of drug cartel. My Mexican friends also deserve the security of closed borders to assure them they won’t be followed by the criminals they left behind or have the country they have come to love become poverty stricken like their former country because of poor immigration management. When individuals enter our country illegally they know the second they cross our border they can be deported. When these individuals grow families under this fugitive lifestyle, it only sets the stage for pain and anguish when they are finally caught and deported, separating them from the ones they love. No one is to blame for this separation but the individuals who knowingly broke federal law and chose a life as a fugitive rather than to enter legally. The only ones who suffer this blatant disregard for law are the children they have under this fugitive lifestyle. Should individuals be given amnesty because they had children while hiding from law enforcement?

School safety is paramount
Safety comes first. At the school board meeting last night, safety concerns brought up by the Chief of Police for Moses Lake were discussed. I want to thank Dr. Stones and Elliott Goodrich for their discussion that hopefully will lead to substantial improvements. I know that the community is frustrated with these two board members in particular over the construction bond, but it is important to recognize that they are doing the right thing by addressing safety. The board should use any funding source at its disposal to fix safety issues at the high school immediately. If the schools aren’t safe, they shouldn’t be open at all.

Love for the lowly meatloaf
Meatloaf is a dish that reached its zenith in the 1960s, when test kitchens for food manufacturers seemed to work overtime in concocting new meatloaf recipes. Women’s magazines featured dozens of meatloaf recipes, everything from stuffed meatloaves to frosted meatloaves and, eventually, even slimmed-down meatloaves that combined ground beef with ground turkey to reduce the fat and cholesterol load.

School board throws out red herring
Late in the January 25 Moses Lake School Board meeting, Chairman Dr. Stones made a most curious proclamation. It was around 10 p.m., and things were winding down after two solid hours of the public telling the board over and over again that we need a new high school. Not a soul spoke otherwise. Shortly before the meeting ended, Chairman Stones proclaimed that the educational problems we see at MLHS are brought on by fragmented families, that our peril wouldn’t be so bad if only local families were intact, giving their children the love and support they need. The responsibility for fixing the distress of students in a jam-packed school, he elaborated, lies with the families, not just the schools.

Government shutdown hurt veterans
When Washington can’t act like grown-ups and compromise, and shuts down the government, then nobody in Washington should receive a paycheck. When they shut down the government, neither veterans nor their families receive a paycheck. Everybody loves to say they care about and appreciate our veterans, but when you close down the government that’s not caring for veterans, that’s hurting veterans. Other countries treat their veterans much better than America, and that’s a downright disgrace to treat someone who protected us this way. With Washington’s lips they say they care for our veterans, but their actions and deeds prove different.
