LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Trust must be earned and the clock is ticking
Last week, I penned a column focused on the Moses Lake School District levy election. My primary point with that column was that voter turnout countywide was abysmal, leading to a small minority of voters deciding on vital issues in the community and to illustrate that there are consequences when we don’t vote in larger numbers.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Honor and hope
I had the privilege of attending three Memorial Day events Monday wherein area residents visited the cemeteries in Soap Lake, Ephrata and Quincy to honor those who served our country and are no longer with us. Some of those soldiers died in combat or in the course of military service away from the front lines. The lifestyle associated with putting on a uniform isn’t easy and there are all sorts of reasons we lose those in the service. Training accidents, helicopter crashes and way too many more. All too often these days, it isn’t the bullet of an enemy that takes down a service member or veteran – it’s mental health issues related to the things people have seen and done in service to our great nation. I spoke with one veteran at the Ephrata event who said he’s lost 11 of his brothers and sisters in arms to suicide after getting out of the military.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Let’s stand together
The Moses Lake School District is facing some challenges. They’re not the only district in our area to have some difficulties. The Wahluke, Soap Lake, Quincy and other districts in the area are facing challenges too.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Dateline wherever ...
If you’re reading this, you’ve seen a few datelines in your time. That city name at the beginning of a news article. Do you know what it means and why it’s put there, though?
National Newspaper Week: The vital role of local newspapers in our communities and democracy
As we recognize National Newspaper Week, it’s a timely reminder of the vital role local newspapers play in upholding democracy and supporting the fabric of our communities. For generations, newspapers have served as pillars of truth, protectors of free speech, and committed guardians of the Fourth Estate.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Civic engagement is more than voting
As I write this, my team and I are monitoring state, local and federal elections and the polls are sill open. There’s some crazy stuff on the national outlets’ websites and enough vitriol on social media to make the entirety of the cold war look like a disagreement on where to get dinner.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: A double thank you
I was pleasantly surprised Monday morning while driving in to work. As I turned right onto East Broadway in Moses Lake, I was greeted by an array of American flags. I thought perhaps it was just the ag businesses in that area, but our nation’s banner fluttered in the wind from the time I got off of SR 17 until I made it to the office.
COLUMN: MEDIA LITERACY: Plain language
When it comes to the news, a reporter should not be telling you how to feel. You know that. Journalists know that. In today’s world though, what we know and what happens – especially regarding national politics – aren’t as synonymous as we’d all like.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: We’ve got a lot to be grateful for
The rain is coming down this week and snow seems to be teasing us from just over the horizon. Eventually, we’ll have a winter wonderland and the red-nosed specter of Christmas swinging through for some holly jolly and some milk and cookies. But first - Thanksgiving.
