This letter is in support of Jeff Foster who is running for Position No. 3 on the Grant County Commission. In addition, my wife and I have gone to almost all the board meetings of the Moses Lake Irrigation & Rehabilitation District since we moved into Moses Lake in June 1981. Since the immediate and present board has been in power with Jeff as chairman with the new manager running the operation, much progress has been made. In fact, I made sure that Jeff was going to continue there before I wrote this letter. The irrigation district has done well since and that is the reason that I think that Jeff will do well as a Grant County Commissioner.

Sundae best: ice cream toppings from scratch

I was thinking about ice cream toppings this week after having a chance to see a few for sale in the local supermarket. Making up your own topping is fairly easy, though there still is effort involved, versus just opening up a container and glopping some on. While I won’t get into the debate about commercial ice cream and how much air is pumped into some brands, some toppings made at home would certainly hide a lower quality version. If you make your own ice cream, putting on a scratch-made topping will give you a flavor you won’t be able to find in the store.

MOSES LAKE — About 225 to 250 volunteers picked up an estimated 2 tons of trash around Moses Lake Saturday morning in the annual “Spring Cleanup.” This marks the 18th year volunteers have fanned out around town on a spring weekend to pick up trash. “For the most part it’s the same folks each year,” participating as volunteers said Alan Heroux, one of the organizers. Heroux estimated the volunteers picked about “half a (garbage) truck full” of winter debris and all-around junk. Organizer Bill Ecret found donations of bags for trash, donations of food for the volunteers after the cleanup and a place to have lunch, among other things. “He basically got everything donated,” Heroux said. “Bill has been instrumental in making this event happen for many years now.” Other companies and individuals donated labor, money and materials.

The guilty pleasure of homemade garlic bread

The guilty pleasure of homemade garlic bread

Back when I started my baking career out of high school, I worked in a local retail megamart bakery that made most of its baked goods from scratch. One of the many things we made was French bread, and the day old specimens were made up into garlic bread. These were sliced up, “buttered,” bagged in foil bags, priced, and then placed out for sale. The shopper would take one home and most likely heat it up in the foil bag via the instructions on the bag. Voila! Nice and simple, soft and squishy garlic bread. You know what I am talking about, as some form of this garlic bread can still be purchased at near any current megamart. There is no convenience to buying the stuff if you like your food to have flavor, as you will have to add additional salt and garlic to the loaf.
