India Policy May Affect Washington Apple Export Figures
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Washington state's apple exports are expected to take a hit this year following a recent order calling for the closure of all but one of India's ports to apples. India has been Washington's third-largest apple export market in recent years. Vice president of the Yakima-based Northwest Horticultural Council, Mark Powers, says it's still unclear whether the country's decision in September to cut apple imports from all regions will remain in place. Powers says Washington exported about $100 million worth of apples to India in 2015, with half those apples going through ports that have recently been closed. The Nhava Sheva port that remains open to apple imports is near Mumbai. Powers says officials from several countries have been calling for India to reverse its decision.

You can make a difference
We seem to be at a point where many people feel that our country is going in wrong directions. From the economy to civil unrest to world affairs to Islamic terrorism to a national debt of almost $19 trillion (check it out at US Debt Clock: real time); all seems to be in disarray and confusion. As individual people, many of us feel hopeless; that what we say or care about or advocate are thrown aside by too many politicians. It seems, too, that even when we elect those we believe will do better that nothing seems to change. Instead, the debt continues to mount (check it out for yourself), civil unrest is on the rise (Ferguson, Missouri, Baltimore, Maryland, New York, Chicago), and Islamic terrorism is on-the-rise around the world and even here in our own country. So, what is one to do? How can I make a difference? It is easy to give up, throw up our hands and descend into the realm of despair.

AAU girls basketball concerns
I am writing with deep concern involving the fourth grade U-10 girls league (note I am not unhappy with the outcome but extremely concerned). At the beginning of the season after Lake Roosevelt’s first win, the LR coaches were told that due to concerns from one Moses Lake coach about LR’s dominance, that the Moses Lake teams would not fulfill the scheduled games to LR and would rather forfeit all games citing self-esteem issues with their girls. Keep in mind that in everything you are involved with in life there is always a dominate team, person, coach, etc., usually referred to as captains or leaders.
Now's the time to fix shortfalls in the state budget
Editorial
The 60-day special session is in full swing, and legislators are working to fine-tune the two-year state budget they approved last June. The refining comes in the form of a “supplemental budget,” which is meant to fix errors and oversights in the underlying state budget or to respond to pressing needs. Filling budget shortfalls for community and technical colleges and the nearly 386,000 students they collectively serve should be a priority.

Social Security is well earned
Social Security is not a handout. Social Security is an income people have worked and died to earn. Many people in Moses Lake judge me because I get my Social Security at a young age due to disability. But I deserve my Social Security because I’ve been working since I was 14 years old. And back then they took big money out of my check, because I didn’t have kids or dependents. But you guys won’t have to judge me anymore. I’ll be working again soon, keeping Social Security strong for this hard-working future generation. And I’ll always fight to keep Social Security strong and alive.

Bathroom hysteria based on misconceptions
The Columbia Basin Herald’s coverage of the new ruling allowing transgender people to use locker rooms and bathrooms reflects the discomfort that a lot of people feel regarding transgender issues. However, I think a lot of the discomfort comes from misunderstandings and misconceptions. We need to do more to understand the issues, rather than just attacking this new ruling.

Spokane Is Home To Miss Rodeo America
Spokane, Washington is home to 25 year old Katherine Merck,Miss Rodeo Washington, 2015. Katherine is currently in her final year of Law School at Gonzaga University School of Law. Her plans are to run for a judicial position on the Washington State Supreme Court to promote ethical justice for land use, water rights, and agricultural estate planning. When time allows, Katherine enjoys hunting, target shooting, wakeboarding, paddle boarding reading and knitting. She is a former rugby player for the University of Notre Dame. “As a dedicated rodeo ambassador, I am honored to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport of professional rodeo and its athletes, both human and animal, with as many people as possible, and serve as a representative and role model by exemplifying rodeo’s virtues of fair play, sportsmanship and hard work. It is a privilege to represent the cowboys and cowgirls who carry on the great western lifestyle, values, and traditions that rodeo embodies. As Miss Rodeo America, I channel my motto “live so enthusiastically you cannot fail” into successfully promoting professional rodeo, creating new fans everywhere I go and ensuring rodeo’s legacy.” Katherine believes it is her duty to actively serve in order to give back to the community that has given so much to her. As a board member, club secretary and public relations chairperson or Rotaract, an affiliate of Rotary, she helped organized community projects and events, including the Junior Lilac Parade which is the largest middle school parade in the country. She is also on the Board of Directors PRODIGY Northwest (Providing Resources and Opportunities Designed to Inspire Gifted Youth) which has allowed her to work with gifted children as well as leading accredited continuing seminars for teachers. Her passion for fly-fishing led her to co-found Gonzaga Law School’s Rod and Gun Club with the goal of educating her peers both about technicalities of the sport through clinics and the importance of stewardship of local waters through annual river cleanups. The Miss America Pageant is excited to work with Katherine for the next year while she is traveling the United States as the official representative of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The right thing to do
Editorial
Grant County’s frigid winter temperatures are nothing to mess around with. For those of us with animals, the winter months mean frozen water bowls outside and family pets wanting to venture inside where there’s warmth. Some cars don’t start as easily in the winter months, and it’s challenging to stay on schedule if there’s snow and ice on the roads. Fortunately, we get through the minor inconveniences and a cold winter makes us more appreciative of warmer spring and summer months.

Quail hunts exhilarating
This has been a fine and productive hunting season. Time spent with new and old hunting buddies is always precious. Notching a tag or dropping a bird is not necessary for a successful hunt, but taking game animals and birds is a valuable addition to any hunting season.

Polar Plunge draws large crowd to Cascade Park
Dozens started their year with a plunge into frigid Moses Lake Polar Plunge
MOSES LAKE — It was 19 degrees at Cascade Park on Friday; perfect weather to ring in the new year with a polar plunge into Moses Lake. The plunge, hosted by Grant County Animal Outreach, was made possible with the help of the Moses Lake Fire Department, who was on scene, hours prior to the plunge, with chainsaws, cutting through the ice to clear an area into which people could plunge. Moses Lake firefighter/paramedic Paul Guerin was in his red cold water survival suit, removing potentially dangerous chunks of ice from the swimming area. Guerin has taken the plunge himself five times, over the years, and was happy to be staying dry in the survival suit. "No. I don't miss it," he said.
