Please help protect the symbol of our nation
GUEST EDITORIAL
Forty-eight states had laws protecting the flag of our nation from physical desecration. These laws were negated in 1989, by a vote of 5-4, when the Supreme Court ruled that burning the flag of the United States is free speech. That decision went against five previous Supreme Court rulings. So many people were outraged by this lack of respect for the symbol of our nation, that a petition drive to collect 1 million American voters' signatures was launched. The goal was reached and in August 1989 petitions were presented to Congress. In October 1989 a federal statute to protect the flag became law. On the day the new flag-protection law went into effect Shawn Eichmann publicly burned an American flag in protest and was immediately arrested. She was convicted of flag desecration - her appeal was the instrument that challenged the constitutionality of the newly enacted Flag Protection Act of 1989. In 1990, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal law unconstitutional; declaring it was in conflict with the First Amendment. Again, the vote was 5-4. The US Supreme Court has made it perfectly clear that the only way to protect the U. S. flag from intentional physical desecration is through a constitutional amendment.
The Time is NOW!
Many people seem to be unaware that we will soon have a primary election to choose our next representative to the U.S. House of Representatives. There is no incumbent running so now is the time to elect a true conservative who will stand up for our Constitution and our rights as American citizens. I believe it is obvious that person is Clint Didier. He is running for the right reasons. He is passionate about trying to stop the free-fall toward socialism that we are currently in. He wants to save our economy so our kids and grandkids will still have a chance at the "American Dream." Even more important than what Clint is, is what he is not. He is not a career politician looking to climb the ladder of success and power. He is not standing in line for his turn at fame. He is not in the pocket of any lobbyist! Clint Didier is just a concerned citizen that knows he can make a difference as soon as he is sworn into Congress. Once you meet Clint and hear his passion and love of America, you will know he is the right person at the right time! His website is: didier4congress.org.

Reader questions government's foreign policy
The war is over?? I cannot understand the thinking (or lack thereof) of our current federal government with respect to what defines when "a war is over." If one side in a war decides to claim "the war is over" and ceases military action, the other side will view that as surrender! A war is not over until the last combatant on the enemy side decides to surrender or is buried. It is just that simple.
Kiwanis thanks Columbia Basin Herald for support
Thank you for your support in advertising for the 21st annual Grant County Mayor's Prayer Breakfast. Your continued support helps the youth of our communities.

Her father Christopher, a Scottish native, was a well-traveled man who first immigrated to United States in 1912. When World War I broke out, Christopher enlisted in the British Army and the Scottish Highlander division, eventually meeting his future wife Mary, who was a nurse in London. Mary was born in Australia to Scottish parents, and immigrated to Scotland with her parents at the age of 7. Chris and Mary migrated to the United States shortly after marrying, and settled in Ellensburg, WA where they bought a farm. They had three children, Isabel, Christopher Alexander (Allie), and Katherine (Rasor,) of which Isabel was the oldest. Debora Deana Bailey
On Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:00 pm, Debora Deana Bailey (age 59) was called home to meet the most amazing artist of all. Her educational level was not one, which offers a degree or certificate, but one of life's tough lessons learned. She was a single mother, who raised one daughter on her own, through life's troubles, tribulations, as well as through laughter, and many enjoyments. She was very much a creature of God. She thoroughly loved and thrived in nature. She was amazing in every aspect of art. Some call art a hobby, for her art was her very essence of survival, as important as breathing is to any living creature. She talked, read, listened, wrote, breathed, and survived through her art. Her amazing, artistic talents consisted of music, painting, ceramics, assemblages, writing of all kinds, and so many more talents in the arts, that words could never describe (except maybe in her own words). She truly was a child of God with the most amazing spirit. She was eccentric and vibrant, right up until her last breath. She lingers in the memory of anyone who was blessed to have met her, and completely unforgettable to those who knew her. On her journey to the grandest art studio in the heavens, she was blessed with a family she could not take with her. Debora left behind to carry on her talents and memories; her only daughter - Shawna Lynne Marr, her son in-law - Robert James Marr, and five grandchildren; Shawna's two daughter's and one son - Kyla Lynne Moore, Christian Wayne Moore, and Trinity Aron Hamel-Moore, as well as Roberts two Sons; Donald (Bobby) Robert-James Marr and Tanner Aaron-David Marr, and one very special feathered friend; her female parakeet Oliver (all residing in Moses Lake, WA). She is also survived by one brother; Raymond, and two step-sisters; Anna and Leah (their whereabouts is unknown). Mommy, you will be dearly missed and loved throughout eternity. With every found object, every yellow rose, every number five, every Meat Loaf Song, every star shower, every holiday, every elephant, every cow and with every breath I take I will carry on your lesson taught to me to our children; and with every piece of art I create, I will feel your presence with me, if only for a fleeting second. ~ Shawna (Boo Boo)

Ag markets diverged again Thursday
Weather news continued weighing on corn futures Thursday. The weekly USDA Export Sales report seemed supportive of CBOT corn prices, but the market suffered moderate across-the-board losses today. Wednesday, June 4
Ag markets took some rather divergent paths Wednesday
Favorable crop prospects seemed to renew pressure on CBOT corn Wednesday. Talk that recent corn and wheat losses will reinvigorate demand boosted those markets Tuesday night, but yellow grain increases prices couldn’t be sustained. Traders apparently resumed their recent sales in response to the favorable moisture situation across the Corn Belt. July corn slipped 2.0 cents to $4.5625/bushel in late Wednesday trading, while December slid 0.75 cent to $4.535.

When bitter is better: How craft beers are keeping the Yakima Valley hopping
Tradition holds that the hop-heavy been called the India Pale Ale was developed by the British East India Trading Company in the 19th century, and that the strong hop concentration acted as a preservative. Serious beer historians (yes, there are such people) will tell you that that's hooey. But the fact remains that the India Pale Ale is one of the most popular craft beers in America these days. So much so, in fact, that the nation's hop growers are scrambling to produce enough of the bitter little flowers.

Ag markets ended Monday on a decidedly mixed note
Corn futures seemed to post a technical bounce Monday. The ag markets started this week rather poorly as forecasts for favorable spring weather continued weighing on prices.
