Reader agrees with Joy Hummer's letter
I agree with Joy Hummer's letter to the editor "Reader dislikes McCoy cartoons," February 20 2014. This kind of so called humor borders on "bullying." The other side of this unkind of poking fun at a group of citizens is very offensive to many of us (and there are many). But it does surprise me that the CBH lets such unfair political, in your face, imaging to even exist in the only daily local newspaper read by both Republicans and Democrats in Grant County. Forgetting the printed word in lieu of online news is starting to look very good to me. Joy Hummer was very kind, in my opinion when she said that Glenn McCoy's cartoons are boorish.

Reader wamts to know more about removal of fish eating brids from Potholes
After reading the Feb. 11, 2014 article "Fish eating birds to be evicted from Potholes island" in the CBH, I wanted to know more about the removal of nesting Caspian Terns from Goose Island because I am aware that the island is important habitat for other species of wildlife. I wanted to find out if the Caspian Tern removal would result in negative impact to other species. I obtained and read the Environmental Assessment and the plan for implementing the preferred alternative identified in the Environmental Assessment for the action that was produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I found that the plan of action contains minimal provisions for avoiding negative impact to other species, notably nesting gulls, nesting Canada Geese, nesting ducks, and nesting Bank Swallows. I am curious as to why the action received a "No Significant Impact" and is allowed to occur.

Reader wonders about the age to possess a gun
As an 18 year old citizen in my community, who is a gun enthusiast, why am I able to buy a gun that can hit a quarter from a mile away but not a pistol and conceal carry it? I would like to be able to protect myself with a concealed weapon when I am traveling or even when I am walking around at night. I believe that the only protection from a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. What good is being able to buy rifles when I can't buy a handgun to protect myself. I can even carry a pistol if I am deployed into war if I am 18, why not be able to conceal carry or buy one for personal protection of my rights legally. If i wanted, just like most criminals, I could go to a gun show and purchase a pistol and not even have it registered. If I get caught though I get arrested, just for trying to protect myself. Why is that okay?

Sweet win means disappointment for friend
The weeks before the 2014 Super Bowl provided enthusiasm and excitement unparalleled in the Pacific Northwest, since, well, perhaps, the end of World War II. Seahawk pennants were flying from Bellingham to Clarkston, from Vancouver to Colville. Seahawk tee-shirts were seen in otherwise formal workplaces, walking the streets, in medical clinics as well as in the showrooms and repair areas of vehicle dealerships.
Kudos to Quincy Crime Stoppers
We applaud Quincy farmer Larry Schaapman and other community members for forming a Crime Stoppers group to help combat crime. Schaapman had his bales of wire stolen last summer and used his experience to help others with the formation of a local Crime Stoppers group. In a recent Columbia Basin Herald article, Schaapman stresses people who supply crime-solving tips to law enforcement can remain anonymous. The group is even exploring the idea of a reward system for tips.
Reader praises the food section of CBH
My name is R.T. Williams. I am a former long-term resident of Moses Lake and current subscriber to the electronic edition of the Columbia Basin Herald. I am writing to praise the food section of the newspaper. One thing that I ALWAYS look forward to are the recipes by Chef and Grant County Gourmet, Dan Bolyard. I love how he often ties the recipes into cultural events, and even things like the changes of seasons, and most recently the Superbowl. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I hope his contribution to the CBH will continue into the future, as he is one of the big reasons that I keep reading. I have made several of his recipes with great success, and hope to continue doing that.

My Dad and remembering fallen 12's
Submitted by Robbie Wiley
MOSES LAKE - My dad, Robert "Dan" Wiley, was born and raised in a small town called Taylor, Neb. He was the biggest Cornhuskers fan I've ever known. I was watching a game with him on Oct. 1, 2011. Their opponent that day was the Wisconsin Badgers. The Cornhuskers started out hot, but the Badgers proved to be too much. It was a blowout to the tune of 48-17-a rude welcoming to the Big 10 for the Big Red. I looked over at my dad at the end of the game, feeling terrible for him and all he could do was shake his head in disbelief. He said #16 was the best player on the field that day and the Cornhuskers didn't have an answer for him.
