Alabaster Box celebrates 30 years
Non-profit business run by volunteers
EPHRATA — Thirty years ago the Alabaster Box opened as an outreach of Ephrata Foursquare Church. ?Located at 229 First Ave. S.W., the non-profit business is still going strong. The business celebrated its anniversary this month with a gathering of past and present volunteers. ?“The past 30 years have been by the grace of God and that’s where the future lies — In His hands,” said Co-Manager Colleen Long. ?The idea for Alabaster Box was started by the church’s then-pastor, Marc Shaw, who spoke at the anniversary celebration. ?Volunteer Sharon Moody started volunteering at Alabaster Box in 1998. ?“Mainly, it’s a ministry and it’s uplifting to me,” Moody said. “It’s a blessing. It’s just the grace and the love that’s in our store amongst our workers and our customers.”?Long said the store is completely run by volunteers. She started volunteering at the business 29 years ago. Co-Manager Verna Jacobson is a 28-year volunteer. ?“I was interested in the store, and enjoyed it and was glad it was here,” Long said. ?She said she enjoys sharing the store’s products, which can uplift people who are having a bad day. ?Proceeds from sales contribute to rent and to Wycliffe, an organization responsible for translating the Bible into other languages. Alabaster Box supports translators Roman and Jan Stefaniw, who are in Thailand. ?The store sells Christian-centered items including bibles, books, gifts, jewelry and T-shirts. ?“Right now, we’re the only store in Grant County of this kind,” Long said.?The store’s most popular items are Bibles and cards. Bibles can be custom engraved by Long’s husband, Don, or by Dennis Hamilton. ?For more information, call 509-754-2295.

I support the continued build-out of the fiber optic network. I understand the fiber program is paying its way. In today’s world of electronics we need that system for our education systems and business endeavors. Without it we can not expect to compete on a state, national or international scale. I urge Grant County PUD commissioners to get on with the build-out and put that project behind us.

Good job to Doc Hastings for listening to the American people who are deeply concerned about the federal government taking over more of our economy. I guess the health care reform bill passed the House in a bipartisan fashion if one bought out Republican is considered good enough to qualify as bipartisan!

Reader reflects on career choice
My wife and I recently had a week’s vacation in Waikiki, Hawaii. It’s beautiful and every thing it’s promised to be. It was our birthday (62) gift to us. Something and someplace for everyone’s pocket book, homeless to mega wealthy. Which brings me to my visit to a high end wristwatch (Chronometer) boutique shop near the Royal Hawaiian and Hilton Village hotels. With some trepidation, — I wear a $10 Kmart watch with faux diamond — I spied a huge Liberace or Elton John style diamond and gold encrusted watch. I held in my hand $78,000. “Is it the most expensive?” I asked. “No, I’ll show you that next,” the reply. A large masterpiece of craftsmanship with multiple dials and buttons was laid out on fine velvet to behold. $228,000. Wow, I was impressed. Who could afford to wear the price of a nice home on their wrist? Then I remembered our nation is full of Goldman Sachs style bankers, healthcare and others on the government payroll and sweetheart deals. I had just made poor career choices.

SEATTLE — Jack Fagan, Mike Fagan, and I co-sponsored Initiative 1033 and worked hard for the past year advocating for it because we firmly believe in its policies and thought a lot of citizens supported it too. Reader discusses votes for Ron Covey
This day and age one has to be careful where they invest their money, especially at election time. It seems Mayor Covey’s $500 investment in the Boys and Girls Club just before the election didn’t have the returns he was expecting. One factor over looked was that these kids were too young to vote. In retrospect, maybe a better choice would have been to donate $500 to battered women’s fund. In this town that would’ve brought in quite a few votes. Maybe even his victorious opponent might have voted for him.
