Amy Matsushita Nose passed away on Feb. 10, 2007. She was born April 10, 1914, in Wapato, Wash., where she was raised and educated. She married James Nose on Oct. 1, 1939, in Wapato and they lived in Seattle until the outbreak of World War II, when they were interred at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming. In 1943, they moved to Spokane and one year later to St. Paul, Minn.

Longtime Moses Lake resident Larry Earl passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, of natural causes. Larry was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Bunkerville, Nev., being the third child of Kenneth Earl and Vertie Ann Leavitt. He spent his childhood and school years in Bunkerville, graduating from high school at age 17 in 1942. He was active in high school sports, playing but never the star of the teams. His family moved to Meridian, Idaho in 1942 where he farmed with his father until being drafted into the army in May 1946. He trained in California, Utah and Oklahoma before shipping out to Europe. He saw action in France, Germany, Belgium and Czechoslovakia, mainly in the rear lines shooting big guns. After the war he returned to Boise where he married Renee Burnett. They were married April 12, 1949, in the Latter day-Saints Idaho Falls Temple. Larry had a dairy farm in Meridian with his father until it was sold in 1955. At that time the family moved to Moses Lake where he resided until his death. He worked a variety of jobs until settling in at Carnation/Nestle for 20 years. The Earls had an acreage in Cascade Valley where they raised cattle, pigs, chickens and a large garden. Larry was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in a variety of church callings including positions with the elders, seventy and high priests. He and Renee served two church missions in their later years to the Philippines and Pennsylvania. He served nine years in the Seattle Latter day-Saints Temple and three years in the Columbia River Temple. He took great pride in his family and their activities. All seven of his children served Latter day-Saints church missions. Larry was preceded in death by his wife Renee.

Annabell Weisel vanSlyke Yager, 70, passed away Feb. 8 in Ephrata after an extended illness. Born Oct. 13, 1936 in Okanogan, Wash., she attended school in Orondo, East Wenatchee and Wenatchee, graduating in 1954. She married Donald Ray Yager in Oklahoma in 1958. Working as a bookkeeper and secretary, she retired from Independent Newspapers in Apache Junction, Ariz. She and her husband owned a heating and air conditioning company in Wenatchee. They traveled extensively for a number of years, creating hand crafted leatherwork items which were shown at arts and craft shows over the western United States. Residing in Arizona for 20 years, they owned Day's leathers and Such, specializing in saddles for special needs. The last few years, Ann worked with the Cancer Survivors groups in Ephrata and Moses Lake.

Laurence (Jim) Nicholas Schaefer, 84, passed away on Feb. 10, 2007, at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata. Mr. Schaefer was born on April 14, 1922, to Anton and Cecilia Schaefer in Nenzel, Neb. He married Laura Schaefer on Oct. 29, 1944, in Battle Creek, Mich. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as an equipment operator. He retired after 30 years of service. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served until 1946. His ending rank was CPL. He received the Purple Heart, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, one service strip, good conduct. He enjoyed horses and saddles. He also loved to restore high back saddles.

Richard E. Keeney, 86, longtime Warden resident, passed away at his home on Feb. 7, 2007, following a long battle with cancer. R.E. "Dick" Keeney was born on Oct.13, 1920, in Coleman County, Texas to Thomas Ernest and Georgia Lobstein Keeney. He grew up east of Coleman, Texas on land originally purchased by his grandfather, Isaac Keeney. He was baptized in Jim Ned Creek in 1934. In 1939 Keeney joined the U.S. Army at Ft. Bliss, Texas. His duty assignment sent him to Seattle, Wash. where he met Mary N. Neergaard. They were married on June 6, 1943. He was discharged from the Army as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. Dick and Mary spent seven years in Seattle where two children were born to them, John Richard and Georgia Ann. In 1950, the family moved to Grandview, Wash. where Dick took up farming until 1962. Two more children were born to them while in Grandview; Mary Christine and Kathryn Elizabeth. In 1964, the family moved to Othello where Dick held the position of general manager for Labbee Mint Farm's Columbia Basin farming operation. On Nov. 10, 1973, Dick married LaDawn Woolley Maw and soon after moved to Warden where the couple built a home and started a machine shop business. Dick entered the political arena in 1992 when he was elected mayor of Warden and served the city in that capacity through December 2003. His position as mayor of Warden led Dick into many areas of civic service. He was a member and chairman of the North Columbia Community Action Council, chairman of the Big Bend Economic Development Council and chairman and founder of Grant Transit Authority. In 1995, The Washington State DOT honored Dick "for outstanding service in promoting public transportation in Washington State" and in 1999 his name was added to the Wall of Fame by the Washington State Public Transportation and Rail Conference. Dick served as president and eight-year member of the Big Bend Resource Conservation and Development Council and was a 10-year member of the board of directors for Cities Insurance Association of Washington. He was most recently Ombudsman of the area's Aging & Adult Care Agency. On March 15, 2004, American Legion Post 209 cited Dick for over 50 years of continuous Legion membership. He was also a member of the Warden Kiwanis Club. Dick was an avid fisherman, fishing various lakes, rivers and reservoirs around the Northwest with his longtime friend, Bill Bisnet. One of his dreams was accomplished when he landed a salmon on the Deschutes River of north central Oregon. Dick was preceded in death by his former wife Mary in 1993. He is survived by wife LaDawn of Warden, son John Richard of grass Valley, Ore., daughters Georgia Bruce of Kennewick, Cris Nielson of Eagle Mountain, Utah and Kate Banaszak of Rapid City, S.D.; Son Richard John Sherbon of Puyallup, Wash.; stepchildren LuAnn Presnell of Othello, Steve Maw of Ronan, Mont., Stacy Maw of Candian, Okla., and Duane Maw of St. George, Utah, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A final visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. with church services at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Warden. Arrangements are in care of Stevens Funeral Chapel, Othello.

Marion Densmore Fairbanks
Marion Densmore Fairbanks passed away on Feb. 2, 2007, to be with her beloved husband, Dick Fairbanks. Marion died at home surrounded by her family and two wonderful caregivers Teresa Lamere and Mary Collins. Mom was born Marion Densmore Ringoen on June 14, 1912, in New Salem N.D. Marion graduated from New Salem High School as valedictorian. Surviving her are her children Donald Fairbanks of Lynnwood, Wash., Bill Fairbanks (Mary Jane) of Moses Lake, David Fairbanks (Cheryl) of Wenatchee and Sue Rhoads (Randy) of Richland. Marion has eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. She read extensively until the loss of her sight about 10 years ago and was unbeatable at Scrabble even after she went blind. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Moses Lake. As the heart of our family she lovingly led us through the good times and the bad and will continue to lead us by example until we are able to be together again.

A longtime Ephrata resident, Valeria M. Owens-Witzel, age 92, passed away in her sleep on Feb. 3, 2007. Born on Feb. 18, 1914, in a one-room sod home in comstock, Neb. Acting as midwife was her grandmother. At her request no service will be held.

Mary was called home on Jan. 29, 2007. She passed away at Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee, Wash. Mary Beth Buckingham Willett was born to Spurgen and Olidia Buckingham in Langdon, N.D. on Sept. 24, 1941. Mary's family moved from North Dakota to Yakima in 1945 where she graduated from Davis High School on June 3, 1959. Mary was confirmed at Centeras Lutheran Church on May 28, 1955, in Yakima.

Lee E. 'Papa' Penhallurick
Lee E. Penhallurick passed away on Jan. 29, 2007, to be with his beloved wife Reatha, his daughter Lisa and grandsons Kyle and Zack. His loving family will never feel left behind, as he is, and always will be, with us. Lee's ship's log of his life noted his love of the sea that took him to far away places in the Navy during the second world war. He was always proud to have the honor of being on the USS Missouri to see the signing of the peace treaty that ended World War II. He shared his passion for boats with his family through the years, building boats and vacationing in the San Juan Islands to create lasting memories for all. His active younger years were adventures in mountain climbing on Mount Ranier and Mount St. Helens. Skiing, hiking, camping and fishing were family favorite activities. His oldest daughter Kathy and her husband Dave lived with him and took care of him lovingly and selflessly to the end. Their family grew and were all cherished by Lee. Granddaughter Melissa and husband Thomas brought great joy to him with their daughters Kaylin and Brooklyn. Granddaughter Mya and partner Nick with their daughter Madelyn were also his pride and joy. Granddaughter Megan brought him daily love.

Mary Elizabeth Pryor
Mary Elizabeth Pryor passed away Jan. 29, 2007, at Wenatchee Central Washington Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents June and Arthur Gard. Mary was born Nov. 6, 1940, in Petaluma, Calif. She married Weldon Clover in November 1959. They had three girls. The family moved to Moses Lake in 1970. Mary worked for the Washington State Department of Agriculture as a produce inspector for many years. The last of her working years were spent at Takata of Moses Lake as a Q.A. inspector. Mary retired in 2002. Mary enjoyed being involved in the 4-H program for many years supporting her three girls and others in the Mae Valley Area. She was the Mae Ranchers horse 4-H leader from 1975-1980. Later on Mary enjoyed showing horses with her husband Bill Pryor. Mary and Bill were married June 25, 1983. Mary looked forward to her retirement cruise to Alaska. The cruise was enjoyed by Mary and her three girls. After retirement Mary enjoyed her early morning swim with her friend Barb Umberger. They swarm daily at Dabalos health awareness center. Mary also enjoyed traveling with her husband to various family members across the United States. Memorial services for Mary will be at the Grange Hall at the Grant County Fairgrounds. The services are at 2 p.m. and the family invites all of her friends. Mary is survived by her husband Bill Pryor of Moses Lake, brothers Merle Gard of Calistoga, Calif. and Robert Siemer of Long Beach, Calif., daughters Joyce Gross of Quincy, Alma Jewell of Waynesboro, Ga., Elizabeth Yonko of Moses Lake and three grandchildren, Brett Goddard of Petaluna, Calif., Stephanie Yonko of Moses Lake, John William Jewell of Waynesboro, Ga.
