Semi trucks such as those shown here and other large, diesel-burning vehicles often use a compression brake - sometimes called a Jake brake - to slow the vehicle down. A compression brake works by adjusting the engine's exhaust valves so that the engine works as a power-absorbing air compressor, according to Jacobs Vehicle Systems. This compression effect can cause loud noises which some feel is disruptive.
