Irrigation district to delay water release

OTHELLO — Winter should be gone by now but since it’s not, the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District has been forced to revise its schedule for irrigation season.

Depending on the weather, water will be turned into the East Low Canal March 24, four days later than planned. The opening date for the Potholes East Canal has been changed also, to April 3.

“Deliveries from the East Low Canal will begin March 28,” according to a press release from the irrigation district. “Irrigation deliveries will be dependent on demand within individual lateral systems. Pump plants will be started when orders are sufficient for start-up.” The irrigation district “will continue evaluating weather and canal conditions and continue to make adjustments if necessary,” the press release said.

Farmers are asked to contact watermaster headquarters in Moses Lake of Othello, or contact a local ditch rider, for the most current information.
