Not just another tax

Please do not dismiss Proposition 1 as just another tax. Law enforcement in Grant County needs the ability to incarcerate (book into jail) those accused of crimes in our communities. The Grant County Jail has had restrictions on bookings more than 65 percent of 2019. This means many who commit crimes in our communities are not incarcerated when located by law enforcement. The only exceptions are those arrested for domestic violence offenses (within four hours of the commission of the crime), felony crimes and felony warrant arrests. Some who commit crimes in Grant County are left in the community which informs criminals they cannot be booked when they commit similar crimes and decreases public safety.

Booking restrictions also increase the danger to law enforcement and other emergency service providers who must repeatedly interact with people who continue to commit crimes, many of whom suffer from mental illness and/or drug addiction. These people are often unpredictable and can become violent when contacted by law enforcement.

With the funds generated from Proposition 1 the county will construct a new jail facility. The new facility will be constructed with a vision to the future and will allow law enforcement to incarcerate those who pose a risk to residents, and provide better mental health and addiction treatment to inmates.

Grant County residents need an adequate jail facility. Please join me in voting in favor of Proposition 1.
