Prep roundup: Othello boys golf repeats as district champions

SUNNYSIDE — Patrick Azevedo was the individual medalist by 10 strokes and Othello boys golf repeated as district champions with a team score of 354.

League champion Ephrata scored 367 to place second.

In addition to Azevedo, the Huskies’ Nathan Roosma and Isaiah Garza qualified for next week’s state tournament at Liberty Lake. Roosma shot an 88 to place seventh and Garza carded 93 to take 12th — the last state berth.

Ephrata’s Jacob Rawley scored 80 for third place and Jayce Moore followed with an 84 to place fifth.

Quincy’s Nate Gonzalez scored 95 and is the first state alternate.

Othello scores: Patrick Azevedo 70, Nathan Roosma 88, Isaiah Garza 93, Malachi Garza 103, Jacob Jewell 109.

Ephrata scores: Jacob Rawley 80, Jayce Moore 84, Buster Davidson 97, Luke Jones 106, Chris Ahmann 108, Will Anderson 114.

Quincy scores: Nate Gonzalez 95, Gavin Sahli 109.

Boys soccer

Lakeside 2, Royal 1

NINE MILE FALLS — Royal briefly led 1-0 in its first-round state playoff game, but fell to undefeated Lakeside 2-1.

The Knights went up in the 14th minute before Lukas Ousley evened the game one minute later. Lakeside’s Ethan Williams scored the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute.

Royal’s Ty Miller kept the game close with eight saves.


2 locals in boys singles district final

YAKIMA — Ephrata’s Masata Kuroshima and Quincy’s Louis Merred will meet for the boys singles district championship Thursday.

Kuroshima dispatched Peter Felicijan of Prosser 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals and Merred defeated Othello’s Aaron Villarreal 6-2, 6-0 in his semifinal match.

Othello’s Macy Hampton and Julissa Cantu, the girls doubles team of the year, face Clara-Beth Hamill and Hannah Walter of Selah for the district championship. Hampton and Cantu beat Toppenish’s team of Anissa Diaz and Berenice Hernandez 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
